NV MP Cook blasts $17M

NOT ENOUGH Canadians are reading books to justify
the federal government’s $17-million annual subsidy to

Canadian book publishing,

Chuck Cook told an Ottawa Communications and Culture

Committee Tuesday.

Cook suggested that only about
10% of Canadians read books und
that once ‘‘romances, mysteries,
light fiction and bestsellers’’ were
subtracted the figure was closer to
5%,

Cook said he isn’t if 95%
of Canadians should support the
other 5%.

government should be in the
publishing industry.”’

At the commons meeting, Roy
MacSkimming, director of the
Association of Canadian
Publishers, told the committee
that according to Communications
Department research, about 50%
of Canadians read at least one
book fast year, and most preferred
books written by Canadians.

He said the money the federal
government spends on direct
funding to the book publishing

“AU I'm saying,’’ said Cook,
“is that perhaps thal money could
be spent better on other Canadian
cultural activities. What it boils
down to is, what the hell can this
country afford?’

He added that he hasn’t read
many Canadian books because
“I’ve found that it’s not of wide
enough interest.”*

turer at the University of B.C.,
says he finds Cook’s comments

dian stuff because it’s not good
enough. The contribution made by
Canadian authors in the last 30
years is being recognized outside

He said Canadian literature has
had ‘‘a real rough time’’ in the
fast 30 years and that even up un-
til 10 years ago it was difficult for
people to find Canadian books.
