Reynolds, in a surprise move Monday, resigned his post as provincial environment minister, citing lack of confidence from Vander Zalm in failing to institute what the environment ministry press releases said would be the toughest pulp mill pollu- tion control regulations in Canada. But Vander Zalm, fearing the economic backlash of such a move, decided to delay institution of the new regulations. The decision by Reynolds to resign over the issue can be seen as one of either prin- ciple or politics. Reynolds maintains it is one of princi- ple; fellow Cabinet ministers, such as Mel Couvelier, say it is politics. But regardiess of which explanation you subscribe to, Reynolds, by using the mill issue, has deftly lobbed a political hot potato into the hands of the premier. The move both made Reynolds appear to be a man of lofty environmental princi- ples and distanced him from the unrav- elling Vander Zalm inner circle. Wheiher the decision was the right one for Reynolds remains to be seen; that it was the wrong decision on Vander Zalm’s part to force Reynolds’ hand on the issue is abundantly clear. LETTER OF THE DAY Lautens wrong about sex revolution Dear Editor: Re: “New lout class and the result of the sexual revolution,” by Trevor Lautens in the Friday, Nov. 9 North Shore News. Trevor Lautens had identified two important issues confronting individuals in society today: 1. Women want to be free to choose their roles in society and in their families. Some men, like Mr. Lautens, are confused and challenged by women wanting this control over their own lives. 2. Some men physically, verbal- ly, emotionally and economically abuse and control women. Unlike Mr. Lautens, how- ever, many men and women do not feel that the result is ‘ta mess, fluid and spreading,’? but rather an opportunity for people of ei- ther sex to achieve greater per- sonal strength and fulfillment. I'm sorry if this confuses you, Trevor, but do try to keep up. The second issue is in no way a result of the first. Wife abuse has been around since long before the “sexual revolution,’’ in many forms and in many cultures. Maybe not quite the way M.Parizeau has in mind, however. The separatist Parti Quebecois leader shook Toronto’s Canadian and Empire Club members Tues- ‘day by assuring them a sovercign Quebec was a certainty. Therefore, Anglos should relax and simply sit down to calm, businesslike negotiations for dividing up the present economic and financial pie between Canada and its new foreign neighbor. To get things rolling M.Parizeau said sovereign Quebec planned to keep the Canadian dollar; it would not be too unrea- sonable about water, road, railway and communication links between Canada and the Mari- time; it would continue to enjoy Canada-U.S. free trade and might even take over a [little federal debt. Thank you very much, sir — but just a cotton-pickin’ minute, as they say! When [ fast looked, there was only one sovereign nation north of the 49th parallel. Canada is the name. And even if its Constitution isn’t yet perfect, I can find nothing in it that says Canada rust negotiate its own dismemberment. In short M.Parizeau, you have to have been smoking something funny if you believe Canada’s 80 per cent of ‘‘Anglos’’ are ready to make nation-wrecking easy and painless for prosperous French Quebec. After listening to you blather on TV Tuesday evening | dreamed all night about ‘‘sovereignty.’’ In the other official language, of course. In my dream you have just threatened immediate unilateral independence and recalled all 75 Quebec MPs from Otiawa — fi- nally bringing Mulroney to his senses. Shorn of his majority, he declared a national emergency and hastily formed a four-party coali- tion government (they left him as PM for the moment simply because his English is better than Chretien’s and his French better than McLaughlin's or Manning’s.) The next day Ottawa SUSPENDED all of Quebec north of the St, Lawrence from Con- federation for an indefinite period. Simultaneously, ail Canadian « Noel — Wright eis HITHER Forces in Quebec and reinforce- ments from other areas moved in- to the corridor south of the river to guard land access to the Mari- times against foreign aggression. The Canadian navy patrolled the Seaway. All federal services to the suspended territory — from UIC, medicare and baby bonuses to the RCMP and Canada Post — stop- ped dead. All CBC stations plus Dorval end Mirabel airports were closed. Canadian dollar shipments from the Mint ceased. In short, Quebec was FIRED. The Quebec government was told that no application to re-enter Confederation would be consid- ered for a period of at least five years. And subject, in any case, to a referendum in Anglo Canada. At that point I woke up. Isn’t it” time you did, M.Parizeau? Anglos have their ‘‘sovereignty’’ fantasies too! eee POSTSCRIPTS: Happiest man in Pemberton at the moment is Hugh Naylor, fishing chairman of the Pemberton Sportsmen’s Wildlife Assn., which recently took over the Birkenhead Hatchery near Mt.
