All of the ladies were equipped _ with cans of de-icer, and the thrill of communal gossip was lacking. No smiles eased the below zero temperature; no new recipes were being exchanged. In fact, the fone male present was actually kicking the box. The group fell back at my ap- proach, and knowing looks were exchanged as I tried to insert my MaILBox key. And tried. And tried. The Supermailbox, made for the Ca- nadian climate, was frozen solid. My husband opened our box with the assistance of his little propane torch. Technology trium- phs. The next day, I observed that the mailman had opened both big doors of the box and was inserting mail, careful not to get his fingers TV is ‘pretty pictures, baby-babble’ Dear Editor:. It was refreshing to read Bob Hunter’s harangue on the medium of television. . 1 would subscribe to Neil! Postman’s edict in his book Amus- ing Ourselves to Death that televi- sion has simply trivialized in our lives. When otherwise serious discourses are swallowed up by television and forced to dance in the arena of prime-time entertainment, they are somewhat de-legitimized. If, in the space of one minute, television tells us that a) we are essentially destroying the protec- tive elements of our atmosphere and must do something before it’s too late and b) disposable diapers _ come in blue and pink, how are we to react? Surely if ours is a culture that has time to worry about what color of non-biodegradable plastic wrappage we are securing to our babies’ bottoms, this ozone thing couldn't be that bad. I believe in advertising. I just don’t believe television should take itself too seriously if it is going to transmit ‘“‘information’’ and buy signals all wrapped up in a neat “entertainment package.”’ When you consider television as pure technology and human SL MTN. I rushed outside and asked his back — he never turned around, duty apparently superseding manners — whether he realized that the Supermailbox keys would not work in freezing weather. With great disinterest he said one word: no. I then suggested that, as he had the doors open and I could see my mail in its little slot, I could have it. He was vastly affronted and told me, as he shut the doors with a chilling clunk, that I had to use my key. It’s too bad that the folks around here have only dogs or cats for pets. I’m waiting for the day when someone moves in with a dragon.
