The decision means council essentially approves the design which involves a 12-storey apart- ment building that will be two feet taller than the highest point of the Insurance Corporation of B.C. Firm wins $4.5m contract NORTH VANCOUVER'S Allied Shipbuilders Ltd. has won a $4.5 million contract to build a coastal survey ship for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Allied president Arthur McLaren said Wednesday the con- tract was not a particularly large one ‘‘but it's nice. It helps keep the yard open." Construction of the 90-foot vessel will employ approximately 50 workers over the 16-month con- struction period and will generate a further $2.2 million in business for associated local industries. The ship will be used for oceanographic and hydrographic surveys along the West Coast. Under the contract, Allied will also supply spare parts; special tools, technical and instruction manuals and testing and trials for the vessel. The North Vancouver shipyard tendered the best bid from the six firms invited to bid on the ‘con- tract, which is the fourth ship- construction contract the yard has won this year.“ Approximately 80 per cent of Allied's 125-member workforce is LADY DI YOU FOOLED US ALL. Ald. Rod Clark said he thought Bosa had met council's conditions. “As a layman, the top of the elevator shaft is the top of the building to me,"’ said Clark. The approved design allows for 100 units with three parking levels. The building will be longer from north to south than the original high rise proposal, but will main- tain a 25 foot promenade between the apartment and ICBC. It also provides enough space for the city to improve the turnabout area at the south end of the site close to the Seabus. Ald. Stella Jo Dean apposed the motion saying the building should not exceed the top of the top floor of ICBC. Dean originally sup- ported the 20-storey high rise that stood 180 feet above ground, about 50 feet higher than the cur- rent proposal. Ald.
