4 - Sunday, June 28, 1987 - North Shore News BRITISH COLUMBIA’S Bob Hunter @ strictly personal ® new Environment Minister Bruce (‘‘Butcher’’) Strachan is an absolute disaster zone. Back when he was still In- tergovernmental Affairs Minister, he launched a rabid at- tack on wolves. A strange topic for such a minister, wolves not noticeably being treated on a government-to-government basis. But at the time, then En- vironment Minister Stephen Rogers was so pinned down in conflict-of-interest problems that he wasn’t making any public statements. Somebody had to rush into the breach. No wimp our boy Bruce, he wanted to escalate the aerial and chemical war against 1 wolfdom. This was the Butcher's maiden speech as he geared himself up to enter into the politics of conser- vation. Since then, the ban on oil and gas exploration along the coast has been lifted and the South Moresby Island park fiasco has almost run its course, with Vic- toria using helpless trees as hostages in a crude deal to extort $200 million from Ottawa. The reign of the new minister of the environment has been as short as it is woeful. Yet coming in, as he did, just as the ban on uranium exploration was being lifted, Strachan’s period in office will go down as the blackest days for B.C.’s environment probably in several decades. We have gone dramatically backwards in terms of preserving or protecting anything. The best—or worst—-example is of course the case of the peregrine falcons, wherein the ‘Butcher decided to let 10 of the Subscription From page 3 managers was Terry Rainey who won a trip to the West Edmonton mall. Jiri and Miloslava Spelina won the grand prize for 2 carrier’s parents of a trip-for-two to Parksville. The month-long campaign was kicked off May 11 when Ken Neveroski and his wife, Sheila, tare birds be captured, even though pesticide use and habitat destruction around the world have left our Queen Charlotte peregrines among the last few survivors of their kind in the world. Environmental groups went to court to get an injunction for- bidding the bird grab on the grounds that the wildlife depart- ment wasn’t doing its job proper- ly. Before the judge could decide, the government's lawyer an- nounced the planned falcon-hunt had been ca!led off, even though hired bird-nappers were already closing in on the nesting grounds. Strachan has since admitted that ‘‘this one was done in just a bit of haste.”’ Really? Trying to sell en- dangered birds? Come on! Even in banana republics, they don’t do that any more. The agreement between Ottawa and Victoria to allow offshore drilling came just as the South Moresby park deal was falling through. {It is impossible not to see a connection. Why was Lyell Island left out of Victoria’s scaled-down version of the park? Well, for one thing, the mining industry prefers logged-out areas to -pristive forest. They don’t have to worry about lumber leases since the trees have been Stripped away. The roads needed to move in huge machines have already been built. The ban on oil and gas ex- ploration was brought in 16 years ago in the wake of the massive Santa Barbara oil spill, by the way. Why anybody thinks it is safer now to drill than back then, J really don’t know. I can’t help suspecting that the Butcher's mad ravings about gunning down scores of seals along the West Coast was some kind of a smokescreen to deflect attention from the fact that the provincial government is setting up the infrastructure for the next stage of the rape of the coast. Otherwise it makes no sense. When was the last time a provin- cial environment minister in this corner of the world showed any particular interest in trying to protect local fishermen? Victoria had hardly been in the forefront of conservation before this. Yet here is Strachan vowing to kill the seals to ‘‘save’’ the fish. Here is a little riddle for you. What kind of an animal kills seals and wolves to save other animals so they can be killed by hunters and fishermen? You got it. A political animal. If Strachan ;eally wanted to protect the West Coast fishery, he might raise his voice against the deep sea driftnet fishery. One thing he certainly would not do is go along with authorizing oil and gas exploration, that’s for sloody sure! If there is a single awesome threat to the fishery, it is oil ex- ploration. In fact, if there’s an oil spill, the peregrine falcons, which feed on the seabirds that feed on the fish, would be victims as well. Maybe that’s it! Strachan wanted to sell off the peregrine falcons because he knows that they are doomed anyway once the drilling permits are issued. drive runaway success were awarded the top prize for longtime News subscribers of a trip-for-two to San Francisco.
