10 - Wednesday, June 25, 1986 - North Shore News Lifeboat rescues A 29-year-old Richmond man was rescued from the waters two miles off Snug Cove by members of the North Shore B.C. Lifeboat Society, 20 yards away from the man’s burn- ing boat. The ‘lifeboat crew arrived on scene within- seven minutes of receiving a mayday relay call that flares had been spotted midway between Lions Bay and Gambier Island Sunday at 2 a.m. Lifeboat spokesman Tully Waisman said the boat’s only oc- cupant, Drew Mitchell, had been in the water approximately 30 minutes, wearing a survival suit and holding a flare and flashlight. Waisman said the lifeboat was able to respond quickly to the call because it was in the area, It had just returned to Snug Cove after responding to a call of a broken down boat. . He said there was a 17-minute delay before the volunteer crew was notified of the second inci- dent. Waisman said when the lifeboat arrived,. the man’s 30-foot beachcombing boat —- the Rowdy I — was fully ablaze. “transport . He_said Mitchell was suffering from shock and smoke inhalation. He was rushed to shore at Lions Bay where an ambulance was waiting to him to Lions Gate Hospital. Waisman said when the lifeboat crew returned to the scene of the accident, the diesel-powered boat had already sunk. Waisman said Mitchell, who has a wife and small chiid, said he was returning home from Squamish, and was standing on the stern at the time of the fire.
