OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR BELL AND DISTRICT COUNCIL An issue with far reaching consequences is in your hands: We refer to the rezoning of two small parcels of land on the Cove Cliff site which would make possible _the building of a new elementary school in the Deep Cove area. Quite frankly, we are worried and a little pessimistic. It ap- pears that a safe, modern, stimulating teaching en- vironment is going to’ be denied the children of Deep Cove because of the exaggerated fears and concerns expressed by a small number. of residents close to the site. Other property owners im_ the immediate vicinity are just as strongly committed to the proposed new school. They see the positive happy consequences for their children and their com- munity that such a well planned facility can provide. OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR BELL AND DISTRICT COUNCIL This letter is being written to advise you that the majority af the people residing in the neigh- bourhood of the Queens Cross Pub are as adamantly opposed to the extension of the closing hour to 1 a.m. as we were toa the location of the Roadhouse in our community in the first place. You are hereby challenged to prove to this Upper Lonsdale Community that: 1. the establishment of the “Pub” has been a beneficial and socially uplifting ex-— perience for members of our community, and that it has enhanced our lifestyle. 2. the extension of Pub hours to 1! a.m. will further enrich the quality of life for those of us who live in sight and sound of this Roadhouse. 3. the extension of the closing hour will further ease parking congestion in the immediate areca of Queens and Lonsdale. (It is noted that nightly overflow finds it convenient to park in the Super Valu, Gulf and Texaco Service Station lots. The demolition of Chevron Service Station will conveniently provide even more space for the overflow extension of = the closing hour will attract only that clientele which you Council members’ would enjoy as house guests at that time of the morning. 5. the extension of hours is necessary to satisfy the needs of the “locals”. 6. the population of the chentele is predominantly local. MORE MAILBOX PAGE A18 the’ As parents and taxpayers who are actively fighting for a new school, it amuses us that opponents to the rezoning imply that the well organized ‘presentation at the .Burrard View Public Meeting on March 12, 1980, ° ‘im favour of the new school was coordinated by- “the unions~” and other “professionals”. If you had attended the ad hoc meetings in various homes throughout the Cove area where mothers and fathers debated the pros and cons of the issues, we think that you would have been gratified to know that “grass roots” democracy still lives in North Vancouver. One thing that we find perplexing is that those opposed to the Cove Cliff school have asked the Concerned. Citizens Association to be their Official spokesmen. Are Dr. Warren Bell's “con- _ cerns” really those shared by the majority of residents in the Deep Cove area? 7. that later closing hours will not further aggravate the already serious problems of noise pollution, litter pollution and apres “Pub- bing” rowdiness. 8. that the establishment of later closing hours will not further enhance the Pub’s reputation as a Roadhouse which caters to the needs of the Upper Levels transient traffic, ““non local” North Vancouver City and District citizens. 9. each of you are so con- vinced that neighbourhood Pubs are such socially At the Regular Council Meeting held March 24, we listened in amazement to Alderman Lakes give a superficial summary of concerns pnt forward by those opposed to rezoning, facts that have been very completely documented by your own planning and gincering departments, by indepeadent consultants, and by your School Board. These reports have been accessible to everyone for months and in some cases years! Yet Alderman Lakes asked for more studies to be done. Surely you don't believe the of the new school have been using as a scare tactic, In closing, may we make some observations which almost seem self evident. All parents want good schools, good recreational facilities and good social services for their kids, and most are willing to make some beneficial institutions that you would be pleased to have one next door to your residence. In order to show good faith, that Council give immediate approval to the principals of Queens Cross Pub to build a Pub next to their own residences with closing hours to ! a.m. We enjoy “quaffing a brew” as well as the next person, however, will you please understand that we wish to preserve the peace and tranquility of the Coupre de Ville OW *“SPRING HAIR CARE CONTEST”’ OVER *1000 IN PRIZES No Purchase Necessary Win a fabulous weekend for two in a, the ‘Ginger Rodgers Suite’, international Plaza Hotel PLUS... But when the .crunch comes, a small minority throw up their hands in _horror at the thought of a school being built too close to them. That will probably change for some people as it is the result of self interest. ‘ Fortunately, the majority of caring parents are willing to make the = sacrifices needed to cope with these problems, and they usually tum out to be very small ones indeed compared with_ the benefits a new school can have for their children, ’ As our council, it is your elected duty to ensure that the greater good is always. served, and that the majority will not be denied ‘their rights by a self interested minority.
