Robert McLaughlin began his carriage works at En- niskilen, Ontario more than a century- ago, with the motto: “one grade only, and that the best”. Before long, the McLaughlin Carriage began to take prizes at the local fairs, and the young owner moved the plant to Oshawa in 1878 to gain a larger production capacity. Robert McLaughlin was both a craftsman and an astute businessman. He soon acquired the Heaps Fur- niture Company so as to imprve his product. He was aided by his sons, G.W. and R.S. McLaughlin, who learned their trade through practical employment in every department of the company. At age 16, Sam McLaughlin was an ap- prentice in the factory, and became a partner in 1892. He was aware of the new and upstart automobile, and convinced his father that they should try their hand at this strange machine. By 1907, McLaughlin's slogan had become “Canada's Standard Car”. About a hundred units were assembled, awaiting their engines, when the firm's chief engineer fell ill, depriving the cars of this vital element. In 1918 corporate revisions were made in the company, and -McLaughlin SLAB RER REE SS isnt SURE CANADA'S STANDARD CAR was the name Robert McLaughlin gave to his autos way back in Enniskillen, Ontario. Later moving to Oshawa, the McLaughlin was a solid dependable piece of automotive machinery. The model above is a 1920 McLaughlin which generated 41 horsepower from its North Way engine.
