What’s it like surviving, in
open water ina crowded

dinghy? Driving an antique car

across the country? Or form-
ing and maintaining a leading
real estate firm? Ask Ed.

Ed’s life journey started in
1917 in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan, but shortly
after his birth, the Aveling
family moved to Yorkton,
Saskatchewan where his dad

took over the Ford dealership.

Ed completed his schooling
there, and worked for a time
ata local gas station before
the tamily moved to Burnaby
in 1937.

For the next four years Ed
worked in the parts depart- ¢
ment of pvo automotive agen-
cies in Vancouver.

In “41 he joined the RCAF
and returned to Yorkton for
training. It was there he
received his pitor’s licence and
conunission on Feb. 5, 1943.
Towards the end of that vear
Ed and Norah were married,
just prior to his going over-
seas,

Ed says: “I remember
vividly June 6, 1944, D-day.
That’s the day my plane went

down.”

He was piloting a four-
engine Halifax aircraft out of
England with cight men
aboard, when the two engines
on the right side failed, caus-
ing the plane to fly in circles
betore crashing, in open water
in the Bay of Biscay, about
+00 miles out of Portugal.
The forced landing caused the
plane to break, with the front
part — yes, the pilot’s section
— hitting the water first.

All eight men quickly got
into the round, inflatable
dinghy and watched the short
20 minutes it took for the
plane to sink.
