MANY PEOPLE will agree the
best time of year is just beginning.

After all, who can turn down a
weekend at the cottage or camp,
outdoor sports or a barbecue with
friends? However, this season is
also the one we should be most
prepared for.

Being prepared can be as easy as
having a box of baking soda on
hand. It’s an inexpensive, multi-
purpose, natural product that is as
useful on your outings as it is at
home.

Baking soda can be used effec-
tively as a cleaner, deodorizer, first
aid and firefighting agent. Even
products manufactured specifically
for these purposes are not as safe
as baking soda.

Baking soda is a completely
safe, non-toxic, pure, natural pro-
duct and is not health or environ-
ment threatening in any form,
which is why it is perfect for all
your seasonal activities.

Here are some ideas of how you
can prepare for the season with
baking soda:

At the start of each new season
you can use baking soda to clean
and deodorize the fridge and cool-
er at the cottage. Mix 50 mL (4 ta-

blespoons) baking soda with one §

litre (1 quart) of water and with a
damp sponge use to clean your
fridge or cooler’s interior and ex-
terior. For hard to remove soil,
scour with dry baking soda on a
damp sponge.

Baking soda cleans without
scratching and there is no toxic
residue. Afterwards, place the box
in your fridge or tape it to the wall

of your cooler to deodorize and
prevent odor transfer between
foods.

Add dry baking soda to a damp
sponge and scour the grill of the
barbecue. Rinse ard dry well to
prevent rusting. daking soda’s
mild alkaline action lifts off dirt
and grease, aziui because it is a
food product, it’s completely safe.

Sprinkle baking soda on a damp
sponge and scour golf clubs clean.
Wipe dry. Mix with water and
wipe clean fishing rods, tackle,
bait bucket, swimming and
snorkelling gear.

Baking soda’s non-allergenic
properties make it desirable for
first aid and health treatments. For
sunburns and minor burns apply a
baking soda and water paste to af-
fected areas.

Baking soda absorbs heat and
acts as a skin coolant. Insect bites
can be treated with the same soda
and water paste. Remove stinger
first and apply paste to infected
area and let dry. Baking soda neu-

tralizes acids from insect bites and
nay lessen swelling if treated
promptly.

Enjoying the great outdoors in a
healthy and safe environment can
be as simple as having a box of
baking soda on hand.
