B2 - Friday, May 4, 1984 - North Shore News Lions sign five more THE B.C. Lions announced the signing of five defensive players to contracts for the upcoming 1984 football season. A graduating senior at Fresno State, Howard Jones is a two-year starter at the defensive end position, where he excelled as a pass rush specialist. Born in Sacramen- to, California, but grew up in Goldboro, North Carolina where he was a high school MVP in both football and baseball. Went on to play his first two years of college football at Riverside C.C. in California, where he was a Conference All-Star, then went onto Fresno State where he earned the starting posi- tion in his junior year. Rated as a 4.7 in the 40, Jones is described by his coach as having ‘‘cat-like quickness and_ reflexes’’, making him an excellent pass rusher. A graduating senior at S.W. Louisiana, where he played all four of his college football seasons, including the past two as a starter at the cornerback position is -Gaylord Paul III. A native of Jeanerette, Louisiana, Paul makes up for any lack of size with good quickness and strength. Bench presses over 300 pounds and can squat lift over 500 pounds in the weight room, and also made his mark as a member of the USL track team, with career bests of 23 feet in the long jump and 48 feet 10’’ in the tnple jump. Linebacker Kyle Barrow, drafted in the 6th round in 1983, along with 1984 draft selections, defensive end Joe Brouwers (4th round), and defensive back Brian Peberdy (8th round), have all signed their first professional con- tracts with the Lions. The .sen of former C.F.L. great John Barrow, Kyle decided to return to school rather than attend camp last year. A_ starting outside linebacker and four-year member of the W. Ontario Mustangs, Barrow will graduate this spring with his degree in Administrative Studies. Selected by the Lions in the 4th round of the 1984 draft Joe Brouwers is a four-year member of the Wilfrid Laurier team, where he played at defensive end and also this spring with his degree in Mathematics and Physics. Selected by the Lions in the 8th round of the 1984 draft, Brian Peberdy is a two-year member of the Huskies, where he played at corner- back. Prior to that he played four seasons with the Saska- toon Hilltops Junior team. A Native of Saskatoon, he is currently working on_ his degree in Engineering at the U. of Saskatchewan.
