C6 - Wednesday, January 18, 1984 - North Shore News Ten comm ONCE IN a while I take a look through my files. Some of this stuff has accumulated for years - how about an airline ad boasting ‘‘London - $225’? Some of the trivia I’ve squirreled away doesn’t have much connection with the world of travel but other pieces, such as the following, adapt quite well to rephras- ing. The piece is called the ‘“*Ten Commandments for Human Relations’? and was culled from a Kinsmen Club of Parksville newsletter. They probably culled it from someplace else - maybe Ann Landers. At any rate, the advice is good, especially when you’re thousands of miles from home and must rely on Strangers instead of family and friends. As far as that goes, it wouldn’t hurt to try the rules out on your nearest and dearest - they might like you better. 1. SPEAK TO PEOPLE. There is nothing so nice as a cheerful word of greeting. (Note: It doesn’t take a Berlitz graduate to learn a simple greeting in the language of the country, but try not to be like the visitor to Canada who greeted everyone with a_ cheerful ‘‘Goodbye!’’) 2. CALL PEOPLE BY NAME The sweetest music to anyone’s ears is the sound of his own name. (Note: But not when yelled Joudly and prefaced by the phrase: ‘‘Gimme a beer!) 3. SMILE AT PEOPLE It takes 74 muscles to frown and only 17 to smile. (Note: Be a bit careful, here. It doesn’t pay to wander around Addis Ababa grinning like a monkey.) 4. BE FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL If you would have friends, be a friend. nd travel- wise by Barbara McCreadie (Note: A little natural cau- tion is adyised when getting to know camel dealers, guys in bars and ladies selling assorted products in alleys.) 5. BE CORDIAL Speak and act as if everything you do its a ge- nuine pleasure. (Note: And, if you feel thar you’re going to be impolite to the jerk who dropped your suitcase in the canal, remove your Maple Leaf pin and in- clude ‘‘Back in the States —’”’ in our tirade.) 6. BE GENUINELY IN- TERESTED IN PEOPLE You can like almost everyone if you try. (Note: I like the word ‘‘almost.”’ I still can’t drum up any affection for the guy who taxied me to my hotel in Rome for ten dollars. I got a scenic tour of the city and later discovered that the hotel was exactly a block from where I started.) 7. BE GENEROUS WITH PRAISE, CAUTIOUS WITH CRITICISM (Note: But remember the old proverb, ‘‘The squeaky Painting in France CAPILANO COLLEGE in- structors Paul and Babette Deggan are conducting their 4th annual painting holidays in France during the months of June and July 1984. BE CONSIDERATE WITH FEELINGS OF OTHERS , There are usually three sides to a controvery: Yours, the other fellow’s and the right side. (Note: Only three sides? Guess what side you’ll be on if you get into an argu- ment with a Bolivian police officer. The wrong side.) 9. BE ALERT TO GIVE SERVICE What counts most in life is what we do for others. (Note: Just don’t be of- fended when someone hands you a tip. In some countries tipping is such a way of life that people walk around with money in their hands, expec- ents for travelling ting to pay for everything in- cluding a kick in the shins.) 10. ADD TO THIS: A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR (Note: Essential during air- craft malfunctions.) A BIG DOSE PATIENCE (Note: Usually bottled in 26 or 50 ounce jugs.) OF A DASH OF HUMILITY (Note: Easily discovered in washrooms devoid of paper.) AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED MANY- FOLD. Assuming that you are still in the washroom, you'll ap- preciate even single-fold.
