B2 - Sunday, April 24, 1983 - North Shore News Ca NEWS photo Eric Eggertson GETTING READY for a big season, North Van's entry in the Senior baseball league is holding regular workouts, hoping to re-establish this side of the water as a powerhouse in the league. Here, David Senger takes his turn. Hard to compare By PETER LORIMER One of the most persistent questions I'm asked here and abroad is) “How does the North American KS league compare binghsh League?” This is a question | can't Soccer with = the honestly answer While its true both games have the same cules. there are big differences Lake example chimate — for The — English League clubs slog it out in the cold, wet) weather on some pretty muddy pitches which calls for some specific skills Butin North America we play tn the the heat” of summer and offen on iar tificial turf Now yust for a moment think how a team trom I:-ngland, used to the cold and heavy field would do in Miami for example with the temperature over 35 degrees and on. artificial turf hh would be extemely tough for them just as it would be tough for us in England Another major adjustment is the travel Over here we criss cross the continent by ai being on the road for up to LO days while in England the players bop oa bus in the morning and are home tor a late cup of tea al might The | artificial turf also requires some petting used to Because of my tught control game Tlike the even surface, but it took me a while to pet used to it But) apart trom Queens Park Rangers, nobody uses WITH THE CAPS the stuff in bengland Also because ol the heavy weather you find = some players who thrive on the mud and ankle deep fields That type of player would require «a long adjustment penod to North Amencan condiGions while a player like Glenn Hoddle. great control, casily Another way with his would fit oan difference North being is. the Amercan developed the game is with players from all the world dnnging shalls to the same place over thea South Americans and the cocrging North Americans, are all blending together to create what will eventually be o unique style of soccer Each nationalhty own $ distinct Britons Europeans has its style and the NASI Is together blending «them Actually 10s quite an caciting (me to be im the league and watch it all Come loge ther So, you can see ats not casy to Compare leagues and come up with ao simples ANSWer You have to plan and prepare for the conditions where youte located But differences mentioned soucern is soccer and it played with minor variations all the world And the beauty of the game regardless of such oas Tve ved that’s Seniors find sponsor The new North Shore Senior Baseball team took a major step towards a suc- cessful season as Mountview Motors, B.C.'s largest AMC dealer, has agreed to sponsor them. The team will be wearing duplicates of the Expo’s blue uniforms with the big “M” for Mountview, on the chest. The team, which will be playing at Ambleside Park, has already been training hard for its season opener May 15. Turnouts have been good but the team is not yet selected and there is stil tume for newcomers to try out (especially catchers). It looks lke the team should be strong at the bat as it has power from the left and mght and could field a lineup of six lefties against right-handed pitching. The likes of Penman, Hull and Jordon should collect the RBI's from the left side and Woodhouse, Wilcox and Bennet from the night side. The team appears to have a real “find” in Mike Nolte, who has experience as high as the Triple A level in the Cincinnau and Los Angeles chain. Mike plays shortstop, switch-hits and has good speed. Pitching, the mainstay of any successful team, is looking promising as three talented young” rookies, Mark Bajur, Steve Sokolski and Curtis Edwards will lead the way. They are backed up by veterans Gord Smith, John Mitchell and Jamie Frandsen. Defensively the team should be — solid however coach Bayne is con- cerned with the lack of experienced catching. Wilcox ts a promising rookie but lacks expenence and knowledge of the hitters in the senior league and Bayne would hke to find a more seasoned catcher to share those duties.
