A9-Wednesday, » August 13, 1980 - North Shore News Dear Editor: After reading your ex- cellent article on “Abortion A North Shore dilemma” (Aug. 6) I feel that I must comment. Mr. Pearce of the North Shore Pro-Life Society says, “The NSPLS is not dictating its views to anybody”: If this Society has its way - elects a majority of members - they will indeed be dictating their views; to the very next lady that applies for a therapeutic abortion. “Women... should carry the pregnancy to birth and then have the child adop- ted.” I can assure you that few women would be caught speaking that sentence. Mr. Pearce cannot himself experience pregnancy but he’s sure in a rush to have unknown women carry out his personal beliefs. Does Mr. Pearce and his Society not take into ac- couint certain facts i.e. being pregnant can lose you your job; being pregnant is hard on one’s body; labor is bloody hard work. Been to the labor wards lately Mr. Pearce? Because no man will ever conceive, carry and bear to dictate views children I believe they have no right whatsover to tell me that I must carry for nine months a child that I do not. want, that I will not love or that I cannot properly support. I will freely argue this point with any woman. For only a woman can realistically discuss what she, and sbe only, is physically capable of doing. Just out of curiousity what is the percentage of male members of the North Shore Pro-Life Society? Corinne Cook ™ North Vancouver A morality of convenience? Dear Editor: I can hardly believe the loose logic some Pro-Choice advocates use in an attempt to justify the high abortion rates in B.C. and specifically at Lions Gate Hospital. Dr. Frank Sigurdson says: “We must do what the community wants right or wrong. We are here to reach the needs and wishes of the majority of the community.” Sounds noble, _ right? WRONG! If the majority of German people had favored genocide of the Jewish race, according to Sigurdson’s logic. Hitler would have simply been a good admini- strator of the community mentality. Are there no absolutes in the area of morality anymore? It seems we are fast moving toward a morality of personal con- venience only. Sure the Pro- Life arguments may sound a bit far-fetched and extreme to some of you but think of it a bit. If this trend to discard more and more of the voiceless of our society, Mc the MONTINENTAL NDC ALTE between Alberni: namely unborn children, what is to stop a policy being proposed in the future to get nd of mentally and physi- cally handicapped children and adults or the aged? I have had to seriously consider personally this abortion issue and for me there is no way I could justify this type of action even though the medical profession would freely offer this ‘solution’ to me. The image of abortion is that it helps victims of rape and incest or those with various physical or severe mental problems. Statistics seem to indicate that pregnancy from rape or incest are extremely rare. I am a mother of a small child born with a ‘birth defect’ of a physical nature and I shudder at the thought of missing Out on his precious presence simply because of ‘fear’. I also know several ‘single Moms’ who are doing very well with their children. It seems to me that a lot of the abortion candidates are simply overcome at the wos he me meee rr . Coil fr t ‘ . I know many people were shocked when the newborn was left on L.G.H. steps last week. I don’t approve of that method of relinquishing a child but I feel it is better than abortion. How is it possible that we can get so sentimental over a wee infant four hours old and yet five months earlier he could have ended up in a plastic bag labeled Fetus-Boy 20 wks. and many would not even bat aneye. Come on people think this issue through. Don't just jump on the bandwagon either side. Personalize it — what would you do? But remember, your choice now may come back upon you in a few years when you're old, poor, unable to care for yourself and there is no Government Support.
