Tom Walker, community ser- vices coordinator for the North Vancouver Recreation Commis- sion, topped the locals’ perfor- mances, finishing eighth overall and third in his 30-39 age group. This was Walker’s second time at the Skaha Lake Endurance Swim; he first did the 11.8- kilometre swim (7.38 miles) six years ago. This year his time was two hours, 57 minutes and 49 se- conds. And although he was 22 minutes faster this time, Walker, 35, said the competition keeps getting faster as well. West Vancouver businessman Shane Collins also improved on his past performance at Skaha, shaving 24 minutes off his previous time to finish at 2:59.55. For Collins, 41, it was a sprint finish to achieve his goal of finishing under three hours — which he managed with five se- conds to spare. He was third in his 40-49 age group and 10th overall. In the 30-39 age group, North Vancouver's Brian Kroeker finish- ed [3th and 35th overall at 3:44 C0. ~-ganwhile, 55-year-old Barrie By Elizabeth Coliings News Reporter Street said he felt fine after his 4:32 swim because he set a man- ageable pace for himself throughout the swim. “I didn’t want to overextend myself — I just wanted to finish,” says Street, who just learned how to swim six years ago. He finished third in the 50-59 age group and 42nd overall. Although Street has competed in four Ironman triathlons (which include a 2.4 mile swim), he says the Skaha Lake swim was an even greater challenge. “Three ironman distances — it blew my mind,”’ says the Burnaby North teacher.
