blossoming in Hyde Park,
and everywhere else
wonderfully uncluttered
with tourists.

The Gulf War may be over, but
Americans, bless them, are still at
home under their kitchen tables.
The wimpishness of screen tough
guy Clint Eastwood, who backed
down from a trip to Britain early
in the war, and the general pro-
vincialism of Americans is the talk
of London pubs, and not
everyone is missing them.

inclined to change their travel
plans. Referring to the IRA inci-
dents in London recently a fellow
passenger said: ‘‘You’d never
cross the street if you let these
idiots get you down.”’

Such pithy comments do put the
situation in perspective. The Finns
have been living next to the Rus-
sians for longer than they care to
remember. Now they eat roast
bear and_toast the Russian navy
with vodka: *‘Bottoms up!"’

Back in London the general
manager of the Belgravia
Sheraton, Moyra Beaves, reflects
that timing in life is everything.

Her elegant little hideaway was
closed for two months while its 89
rooms were refurbished and the
chef whipped up a new menu.
