Hand preference starts early

The development of right-
handedness or tefthanded-
ness in babies can be pre-
dicted by the direction the
newborn (under four days
old) prefers to turn its head
when lying on its back.

In an initial trial of 150
newborns (81 male, 69
female), 65 per cent showed
right-looking head
preferences, and tS per cent
demonstrated left
preference, with the other 20

per cent mixed. In mam-
mals, distinct “handedness”
is common,
human beings is
handedness prevalent.
Further studies of 20 of
the original 150 newborns
(11 males, 9 females) over a
22-week period indicated
that most of those with clear
lying preferences at birth
retained the preference.
Sixty per cent of these cases
went on to reveal at 16

right-

but only in

weeks a reaching. preference
coinciding with  head-
direction preferences. The
reach-and-head-turning pre -
ferences were similar in 80
per cent of the cases by 22
weeks.

The mechanisms linking
infant head-orientation with
reaching-hand was _ not
identified, but the in-
vestigator pointed out that
the rnght-looking mfant has
more opportunity to observe

the right hand and possibly
to develop better hand-eye
coordination.
