However, the danger is not aver vet, there are sulla Jot of nasties out there waiting to attack vour trees over the next few Months. The true cedars are not our Red and Yellow cedars (Ubnja plicara and Chamaccyparis nootkatensis) but Cedrus atlantica and C. deodora, wwo beautitul frosted blue- or green coloured conifers. IWyou have one of these trees you may have noticed in past springs the tips of the shoots turning can or light pink and curling at the end. Some people dismiss this as ng to the roe frost damage but it is actually a relatively new fungal discase called Kabatina. The fact that these trees are on their northern limit means they suffer from cold damage in the winter and this allows the fungus to invade the plant tissue. Fungicides can be used on smaller trees but keeping the tree healthy and stress free is the best line of detence. Spruce galls are nor deadly but they can make a spruce tree look unattractive. There are two varieties that can attack the more commonly grown species of spruce. The name phytophthora means “plant destroyer” and it certainly does its share of damage to trees and shrubs. The spores in the soil actack the roots and cause the plant to decline. This can show up as crown canker, collar rot, discoloured leaves, wilting or die-back. The inner bark, cambium and sapwood may be discoloured reddish-brown. The spores are hard to identify but it is known they need running water for germination and for movement. They can enter the plant through wounds in the roots or bark. Infection is more likely with poor soil condi- tions such as excessive mois- ture, incorrect pH and low nutrient levels. Fungicide sometimes works but once infected the plant usually dies. Armillaria root rot is another root fungus that is attacks a wide range of garden trees and shrubs. T have found it to be responsible for the death of many of the pyramidal cedar hedge trees. The mushroom stage of the fungi develops in the fall and appears on the decaying wood as “honey mushrooms.” On the trunk below the ground, white veined fans (meycelial sheets) can be seen under the bark. Infected trees should be completely removed as the spores survive on decaying wood and can remain active in the soil for many years.
