THE TAYLOR HOUSE

Combination of styles used
in °20s NV boulevard home

THE DEVELOPMENT of
Grand Boulevard began in
1906, when land was first
cleared.

It was originally intended to be
a high-class residential develop-
ment and several large homes were
built shortly ‘after this, on lots
advertised by the North Van-
couver Land and Improvement
Co.

This first building boom ended
abruptly after the disastrous
recession of 1913, and the subse-
quent First World War.

Just when a recovery was
beginning to be made in the early
1920s in house construction, it was
ended in the late 1920s by the

onset of the Great Depression.

These starts and stops in home
construction help to explain the
housing mix un the boulevard.

The home pictured ‘above was
one of the homes that was built in
the second construction surge on
Grand Boulevard in the 1920s.

This lovely home is a blend of
elements of both the Tudor
Revival and the English Arts and
Crafts style and was designed by
Benzie and Bow in 1925.

It was built for Herbert W.
Taylor, the general manager of the
W.H. Malkin Co,

It is now the home of the Jor-
dan family, originally from Vic-
toria.

Many of the early plantings
have been retained and the home
is surrounded by a variety of
mature shrubs.

It is in close proximity to other
heritage homes and is one of the
two Benzie and Bow-designed
homes from that time that are
pointed out on the Grand Boule-
vard Heritage Walking Tour that
takes place every year,

Interior design course
set for January start

STARTING IN January 1994,
North Shore Continuing
Education (NSCE) will offer a
two-year part-time certificate
program in interior design and
decoration.

The program has been devel-
oped to give graduates the the-
oretical and practical know-
ledge to plan and execute inte-
rior design projects.

It is geared to mature stu-
dents and high school gradu-
ates whose carcer opportunities
would be enhanced by a sound
knowledge of interlor design
and drafting practices.

Courses focus on design and

drafting and cover related sub-
jects, such as color, lighting,
interior finishes, history of art
and design, three-dimensional
drawing and business practice.

The two-year program will
offer {2 courses on a part-time
basis over six semesters, two
courses per semester, twice a
week,
