Burstyn has sat behind the lens for dozens of TV series and feature films, including Foxfire, Toy Soldiers, Tales From the ' Monkeyhouse and the CBC > made-for-TV movie Liar, Liar, but more often than not he winds up at loggerheads with directors. ‘I'm not terribly aggressive with directors — | don’t push them around, If they’re confused, | can help; if they’re confused and arrogant, | have to cobble the film together sometimes. —_.. “4 worked with one director who was so busy thinking about his next film he. forgot to make the one he was working on,” he says, shaking his head. “It's difficult to make a bad - film; it’s almost impossible to make a good film. That's why it’s great to work with a director who has a clear agenda. There’s much : better collaboration. The image and the story are so closely mar- ried it can’t be just pretty pic- And while he has yet to work with Bertolucci, Burstyn has hit it off with many directors, including Jorge Montessi (The Odyssey}, Carl Schenke! (Eye of the Demon, The Hitchhiker), Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Heatwave) and Paul Shapiro, who directed The Lotus Eaters, Some of his favorite moments, he says, were on the set of The Lotus Eaters, a ‘very low budget’ new Canadian film that was shot in B.C. “There was more confusion but more freedom (than on Amer- ican productions) — like having no teacher in the classroom,’’ he says of the experience. Burstyn is indebted to - Hollywood for bringing its technical expertise north of the border and credits the Americans for helping train B.C.’s crack crews, He’s also grateful for the boost they've provided his career. Burstyn started out as an under- ground film-maker in Montreal and moved to L.A, in the late ‘70s. He lasted seven years and still maintains an apartment there part-time, but he’s got five good reasons why he won't live there year-round: “One day | was sleeping in the back of a van on the way to work and some guy drove by and put five bullet holes in the van and hit the driver in the hand. My entire grip crew carries guns on their bodies when they go to work,”’ But that Hollywood helping hand, he says, has at the same time choked off B.C.’s indigenous film industry. ; “Hollywood comes here and trains peop!e in a very professional manner. Bui they've also trained us out of an indigenous industry. “To make films, you need large crews, and Canada can't afford that. People, and | fall into this category, have become used to getting paid a certain amount of money, and they're not willing to accept half the pay and work with less equipment.” But sometimes taking a pay cut is worth it if it means working on a production like The Lotus Eaters. Burstyn has worked with enougt film and TV companies to know when to draw the line. And he won't do any more films that denigrate women (His first feature, he is loathe to admit, was the mindless Heavenly Bodies, which was nothing more than the chance to watch actor Cynthia Dale sweat in tight aerobic pants). What films does he want to do? “4 just want to work on good movies,” he says. He’s still obviously looking for his Bertolucci. 5 > . ow; LRA PT Cy PRUE CONFESSIONS OCPT. 1 MET AN Vou FRIEND ~ A FORMER CAR TCONIS T- AT A PARTY.
