N 27 ~ Sanday, June 11, 1939 - North Shore News U.S. PLAYING THE STOCK MARKET billionaire reveals secret of his success WHEN MONEY talks, people listen. And when it comes to mak- ing money, few investors have done better than Warren Buffett, an American. When Buffett talks, people listen. Buffett is likely the most suc- cessful investor alive today. He has built his own fortune, estimated at more than US$3 billion, by in- vesting in the stock market for the past thirty-three years, Buffett spoke on successful in- vesting in April during a share- holders meeting of a company called Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which is one of Buffett’s principal investments. Buffett’s approach to investing is straightforward — invest in value. Find shares in good com- panies that are in wonderful businesses and purchase them when the price of these shares is below their intrinsic value. In other words, look for stocks that are undervalued for one reason or another. Buy them, and hang on to them for as long as it takes until the market realizes their value and the price moves up. Buy low, sell high. Here are a few of Buffett’s quotes from this meeting: On successful investing: ‘You get into a lot of trouble looking at statistical data about economic Phenomena because everybody loves to come up with a system that worked over the last. twenty years. If you could make money just by looking at past data, the richest people in the wofld would be librarians. It does not work that way. Most systems can stand any- thing except their publication.” On time management: ‘People rise in business because they are good at something; theg they don’t have the time to do what they are good at.” The concept of value i investing is not new — but it’s one that takes research and discipline to follow. That may be why so few people are successful at it. But the bottom line i is that value investing is perhaps not the quickest way to make money in the stock market — but it is by far the best way.
