Per BER 68 - Friday, May 12, 1989 - North Shore News CANADA-WIDE Construction starts soften in first quarter CANADIAN CONSTRUC- TION starts turned in a weaker performance in the first quarter of this year than in the same period last year. The. absolute level of the starts, however, remained quite strong. It is well to remember that even if starts decline somewhat, the amount of construction ac- tivity taking place for some time to come will remain high because of the carry- over of work begun in the last year or so. CanaData has recorded an increase in the square footage of residential starts in this year’s first quarter, plus two per cent compared with last year’s first quarter. Dollar volume in this cate- gory, however, declined eight per cent. Commercial work was the only category to record an increase in both squarcfootage and dollars, plus five per cent and plus 17 per cent respectively. Institu- tional and industrial starts recorded declines according to both measures. Institu- tional work was off 21 per cent in square footage and 23 per cent in dollar terms. The starts figures are im- portant because they are ad- vance indicators of the de- mand for the products of many manufacturers and suppliers in the construction industry. _ In square footage, starts on residential construction Zacreased two per cent to 42.5 million through March of this year versus 41.6 mil- lion in the same period last year. There was a decline in dollar volume, however, of eight per cent to $2.1 billion from $2.3 billion. Nationally, there was a considerable disparity be- tween starts on single and double residences (single detached and duplexes) ver- sus Starts on multiple units such as apartment buildings and condominiums. The singles and doubles category remained strong, +26 per cent in dollar vol- ume, while multiples weakened significantly, -27 per cent. Quebec was particularily weak in starts on multiple units, -48 per cent in dollar terms. Ontario was the source of strength in the construction of singles and doubles, +66 per cent. Alberta and British Colum- bia were particular bright spots in the country in terms of residential! construction.
