Hoax points to need

A HOAX that resulted in anxious members of the’
B.C. Lifeboat Society spending an hour afloat off
West Vancouver in search of a non-existent over-

“This reatly points to the
need for a Coast Watcher
program,’” says Waisman.
“If we had 10 people regis-
tered along the waterfront
there, we wouldn't have had
to launch the rescue boat

_ (and incur the cost that goes

with that).’”

The Coast Watchers pro-
gram depends on volunteers
to scan the waterfront area
around their homes when
emergencies are reported.
With the extra land-based

eyes at work, says Waisman,
emergency scenes can be
quickly pin-pointed and
hoaxes can be quickly iden-
tified as such.

“Our Coast Watcher pro-
gram is going quite well but
there’s a need for a lot more
volunteers,’’ Waisman Says.
