A8& - Wednesday, October 17, 1984 - North Shore News Holy smoke, yet ANOTHER ‘rights’ group! T COSTS ABOUT $25,000 to place a full page advertisement in the Globe & Mail, and a group calling itself the Non-Smokers’ Rights Association has forked out that much in an attempt to bully newspapers into not taking cigarette ads. It's funny really, when you consider that they spend money on doing something they say others shouldn't do To wit, advertising. Anyway, here we have another Bunch out to serub the world clean, and their plaint as that newspaper publishers are putting cash before conscience by running tobacco ads. tts also claim ed that the said publishers are violating the Canadian Code ot Advertising Standards Which code, they say, pro- hibits) advertising that en- cOurages “unsate or dangerous practices.”’ They go on and on about how the newspaper industry should honor its own code of ethics and not promote death and disease. But they seem to know that they are. only blowing smoke in the air as far as having any effect 1s concerned, because they complain that the rascally publishers go on doing what they ought not to do. So the association asks people to write to Ottawa demanding that tobacco ads be banned. It would also like some money from you so that it can go on advertising itselt. There are, it seems to me, a number of incongruities and inconsistencies, not to men- tion idiocies, in the position of these worthies. And 1 speak as one who has never puffed a weed in his life Honest. I make no case for false advertising. But that is not the issue. If there is such a clause in the code it should be removed forthwith. Such an assumption 1s an insult to people's intelligence.
