My readers have always
been great whenever I've
asked for assistance — and
sometimes I haven't even
had to ask. One lady, a
veteran of many Christmases
spent in Hawaii, took the
lume to write me a four-page
letter with some “Do's and
don'ts” which are so sensible
that I'll pass them on to the
rest of you. These are worth
clipping — even if you
haven't any intention of
EVER spending that time of
year away from home and
hearth. I'm the mother who
said, “Never!", but ...? Here
are the suggestions:

1. Unless it is totally
impossible to cook your own

family Christmas dinner, do

NOT eat in a _ local
restaurant. Many are closed
OR booked up as in the case
of hotels, for their own
guests. The rest are very
expensive and/or serve “dry-
paper turkey.”

(Question: Do most hotels
and restaurants junk their
regular menu on Christmas
Day to serve the traditional
fare only? BMcC)

2. Order your turkey as
sOOn aS you arrive.
Traditional foods always run
short.

3 If you must have a tree.
take along a little artificial
one. Stores in Hawan always
run out and they are very

expensive. We took
decorated stockings along
Jast vear. filled them with

small gifts

4. Use all the things you
cannot do athome to make tt
4 special Christmas. An early
morning and a
breakfast of pineapple and
papaya. look for Norfolk
pine trees decorated with
orchids in hotels and
shopping malls

§ Getto know your condo
neighbors Ten to one. they
are fechngy slightly lonely too
and the “more the merner”
sure works

6& Take along some. of
your own seasonings They

don’t take up much room but
are expensive in Hawaii.

7. Bring along = your
Christmas card list and send
postcards instead.(Barbara's

tertained, but not this year
unless they pay their own
airfare. For those of you

8. New Years Eve en-
tertainments should be
booked early. Better still, try
lo arrange a pot-luck steak
barbeque around your pool.
Much more fun and
cheaper.

9. Watch your local paper
for the location of fireworks
display at midnight. This 1s
really worth seeing

One Vancouver tour
operator is working on a
scheme whereby, if any of
his Hawaii customers
receive any criminal
treatment in the islands, he
will attempt to. get them free
passage and accommodation
when they have to RETURN
TO TESTIFY AT THE
TRIAL. I don’t know if that
makes me feel reassured or
not.

I “Flew the friendly Skies
of United” a couple of weeks
ago and found them much
the same as any other
reliable carrier. EXCEPT!
They have one stewardess
that should be RETIRED.
Not fired but kicked right
upstairs to their highest
position in passenger
relations. What a delight this
gal was!

As usual, clutching my
cigarettes, I got sent to the
rear of the plane with the
other nicotine freaks.
Usually the service back
there comes in three speeds:
SLOW, DEAD SLOW and
FULL STOP. Not with this
pal in charge. She never
stopped moving from) one
seat to the next — an-
tucipating what you wanted
before you thought of it
yourself. Everyone tn the tail
section laughed with her for
the whole long flight.

As usual, when three
chorces of meals are served,
some run ourt faster than
others. As it came our turn, |

asked “Okay, what are you
outof?”
“Guess?”

“My first choice and my
second choice?”

“If your first choice was
the Newbury and the second
the crepe, you yust won the
pnze ~

“Yetch! Beef only, eh?”

scrape off the beef for you ©

We both burst out
laughing and she advised,
“Shut up and eat the damned
beef before someone grabs
that too!”

Stewardesses on United
wear name tags. This gal,
“Casey” wore two. Right
over her regular badge she
had another reading: Ms.
Hitler!

Like I said: United better
get her into management
fast, before some _ other
airline offers her double the
Salary and steals her.
