awe] Stone Ci2-Wednesday, February 27, 1980 - North Shore News home improvement | New wallicovering styles and colors emerging in the 80s will be coordinated and luxurious— whether inspired by classic traditional or “high tech” furnishing with its industrial influence— according to a recent design survey conducted. by the Wallcovering Information Bureau. Design and color direc- tions of new wallcoverings are in step with = the movemert toward greater sophistication in home furnishings. Trends in wallcovering de- signs forecast by designers for this decade include a heavy emphasis on mini prints and orientals, and a renewed focus on traditional patterns: Mini prints, smaller scale prints and geometrics have grown in populanty with the move toward smaller homes, apartments and = con- dominiums. - Wallcovering colors are becoming clearer, cleaner— more colorful and _ less grey—than in recent years, observes Wallace Michael, Director of Design for the General Tire & Rubber Company. Rose, sapphire blue, apple green and red, as an accent color, § are examples he cites. Among other important colors mentioned by designers are plum, dark rose, raisin, purple, desert tan, foliage blue and green. DESIGN TRENDS Oriental designs are gaining favor as a result of increased trade with China, many designers comment. “Oriental wallcoverings offer a fresh look, much different from the European influence we have. ex- perienced in the past few years,’ explains Ron Rohner, Executive Vice Kassel President Corp. of the There is also a strong. focus on traditional patterns, ranging from small prints to large, elegant designs. One’ industry “consumers expect accept time-tested traditional patterns. They ae often less willing to ex- periment during an economic slump.” Other designers explain the strength of traditional wallcovering designs as part of an overall return to classic elegance in home fur- nishings. RICH COLORS In color, blues are strong, with trends toward havy or midnight blue, in com- bination with rust or burgundy, the designers observe. Dark, bright blue is also popular, with accents of tan, sand, beige or peach. The return of soft, but clear, turquoise and aqua is also seen. “Earthtone wallcoverings, with a litthe more mchness and vibrancy, will continue in their populanty,” states Leila Serio, design director for R.E. Thibaut Wallcoverings. Neutrals are still present, designers still indicate, with chocolate brown at one end of the spectrum, ranging to beige, bisque and bone. Dusty pastels and soft, light colors are favored by designers for traditional and documentary type wallcoverings. Compatibility with existing furnishings, both in design and color treatment, is important in selecting wallcoverings, designers advise. Wallcovering collections offer a wide choice of patterns— many with companion fabrics —in color combinations that can serve as the basis for an en- tire decorating scheme. One designer calls this the “in- stant decorating” aspect of wallcoverings.
