He has witnessed the atrocities of war and experi- enced the good and the ugly sides of life. A positive person, Ralph advises: “Keep a posi- tive attitude about life and learn how to cope with prob- lems.” Although it was hard to do at times, he followed his own advice as a prisoner of war in six different PoW camps. Losing family members to the Holocaust, relocating in far- off places, adjusting co different occupations and lifestyles, and maintaining a lifelong love for sports and music, Ralph continues to live an active, diversified and interesting life. In West Berlin, Germany, on July 6, 1912, infant Ralph became the second of three sons for the Herzstein family. The three siblings had a happy childhood. Throughout his life Ralph has been involved in gymnastics and ‘team. sports, and his love for physical activity still remains. He received his early education in Berlin, studied English and French at a !an- guage school there, and attended law studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin (1930- 1933). “Berlin in the 1920s and carly 1930s was an exciting and wondertil place to tive,” says Ralph. In September, 1933, Ralph went to Holland for four months before going to England where he taught profile German in a language school. Around the middle of 1934 he sailed to Africa, a voyage which took three weeks. He was thrilled with the natural beauty of Cape Town, South Africa, and decided to settle there. He obtained a job as an office bov in the coffee and tea industry, earning S5 per month. In two months he moved up to an office clerk, in another six months he com- menced managerial waining, and a vear after that found Ralph as the general manager of the firm. He joined the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1935 and became a very active and concerned member. He remained in Cape Town for approximately 16 years, including, the Second World War years.
