Amor De Cosmos (Lover of the Universe) — Biii Smith prior to leaving the east coast in 1810 for the gold rush fortunes of Califor- nia — went on to publish the first newspaper in Victoria. He was also a_ wit-sharpened thorn in the side of the ruling British government. . Swapping the publisher’s desk for the soap box, De Cosmos waded into politics and became the: driving force behind putting the ‘‘province’’ in The Province of British Columbia. As ‘premier of B.C. from 1872 to 1874, he fought in the hinterland of Ottawa for the rights of westerners.
