22 - Sunday, April 12, 1992 - North Shore News SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Commitment is greater ON SUNDAY, March 29, there was a historic gathering of over 710 North Shore Christians at the Centennial Theatre. Never before in the history of the North Shore has there been so many Christians from so many different denominations gather together to celebrate their unity in Christ. The response was so overwhelming that people had to be turned away because of lack of room in the theatre. Why did Christians from over 19 different congregations choose to celebrate together on March 297 They did so because they are sick and tired of all the barriers between Christian churches. They wanted to express that what they have in common (a commitment to Jesus as Lord) is greater than their denominational differences. The North Shore churches have come to realize that the good news of Jesus Christ will not be taken seriously by the rest of the North Shore if Christians are seen as wasting their time in fighting each other. The Celebration Rally was a first step in helping North Shore Christians learn how to really love and forgive one another, so that the world may believe. The Celebration of Unity was a direct offshoot of a clergy prayer group that has been praying together for over six years at Hillside Baptist Church. Fifteen to 20 pastors and priests THE FOLLOWING is a selection of volunteer opportunities avail- able through North Shore Com- munity Services (NSCS). Ed Hird Contributing Writer meet every Tuesday from noon to I p.m. to pray together. Six years of intensive prayer has forged a bond of love and unity between the clergy that no amount of committee meetings could ever create. Peter Biggs, pastor of Cedar- view Church, was particularly pleased with the cross-section of pastors and lay people turning out for the celebration, from Pentecostal to Roman Catholic. It was particularly encouraging to see Fr. John Tritschler of Holy Trinity Catholic Church join hands with the other 21 clergy, as they prayed together on the plat- form. Biggs felt that such an event represents cause for hope in a return to Christian foundations on the North Shore. Jim Lucas, pastor of Canyon Heights Pentecostal Assembly, commented that it was good to feel the excitement with churches from such different backgrounds praising the Lord. Lucas sensed a tremendous enthusiasm and was encouraged by the potential of churches who work together. in unity. John Hardy, pastor of Hillside Baptist Church, saw it as a great celebration of people coming together and just praising God. Brian Buhler, pastor of the North Shore Alliance Church, thought that it was a fantastic event. He saw it as a true celebra- tion. All the little things that divide melted away and the main thing that unites us (which is Christ) became crystal clear. The joining of hands of 22 pastors on the platform was very repre- sentative of the North Shore churches. The turnout showed that people are ready for this on the North Shore. People, said Buhler, are unhappy to continue on in their own litle worlds without relating to the wider Christian community. Ron Hunt, rector of St. Cle- ment’s Anglican Church, felt that it went well. Hunt served on the planning committee that spent six months planning this celebration. He commenied: ‘It was a good night. We should repeat it.’” Randy Berg, pastor of Delbrook Baptist Church, felt that it was an excellent opportunity for the church here on the North Shore to celebrate their unity in Christ. He thought that it was good to meet together, separate from our denominational labels without watering down convictions. € — rev.
