Bonn’s cobbled main square is dominated by an elegant rathaus, or city hall. There is, as you'd ex- pect, a large statue of Beethoven, but unexpectedly, there is also a familiar chant from the past. Yes, the Hare Krishna boys are here, along with the occasional wino understandably unable to resist the lure of Rhine hillsides covered with grape vines. A warm fall morning finds peo- ple drinking the excellent German coffee at tables in the square, while late at night tables outside a city centre hotel bubble with music lovers who have just emerged from a Beethoven concert. A statue of a kaiser — replace- ment for the one shot off its plinth by the Americans — stands near- by, a reminder of the old Ger- many, one that seems very far away as we raise our glasses of beer and drink to peace and pro- sperity. Some traveliers head for the wine country of the Moselle Valley, while others follow the Rhine, which flows majestically from its cradle in the Swiss Alps to the delta in Holland. A word on this: Lufthansa has opted to offer first class service on its DC-10s out of Vancouver, so business class passengers are upgraded to the roomy first class cabin — it’s the best deal in the skies. Lufthansa’s duty-free has good buys in Swatch watches and Siemens radios, the latter a Ger- man-madz portable clock alarm with five short wave bands. Back to the train: on arrival at Frankfurt airport passengers go downstairs and there it is — long, elegant and very fast. I chose a seat in the restaurant car, and en- joyed lunch as we swept along the banks of the Rhine, always busy with a long barge or a cruise boat, while high on the hills were castles galore, lingering remnants of the days when every Rhine prince and pretender had a suit of armor and a castle to keep it in. Bonn takes just 114 hours by the airport express. To fly costs the same and is quicker, but don’t. Better still, get out and walk, the way the Romans did it.
