Marine training facilities open to public

EVENING AND WEEKEND COURSES

FEW NORTH Shore residents are aware that many of the
facilities of the Pacific Marine Training Institute (PMTI)
are available to them in the evenings and on weekends.

Built in 1981, the PMTI is one
of only five such training centres in
the country. Serving the training
needs of professional mariners
during the day, the institute opens
its doors to the Power Squadron,
St. John’s Ambulance and North
Shore Continuing Education after
hours.

Of particular interest is the in-
stitute’s two-day Sea Survival
Awareness course for families
(children 12 and over). Every local
boater knows how quickly weather
conditions — and luck — can
change in our coastal waters. This
practical, hands-on course stresses
the prevention and treatment of
hypothermia and the use of
lifesaving equipment.

Braconnier believes that the in-
stitute’s sophisticated facilities
should be used to improve the
knowledge and safety of the small
boat operator. Most of the courses
offered through NSCE are taught
by certified mariners with many
years of experience. Loran, Coast-
al Navigation and Electronic
Navigational Aids are a few of the
courses currently offered. Sugges-
tions for new courses are wel-
comed.
