Built in 1981, the PMTI is one of only five such training centres in the country. Serving the training needs of professional mariners during the day, the institute opens its doors to the Power Squadron, St. John’s Ambulance and North Shore Continuing Education after hours. Of particular interest is the in- stitute’s two-day Sea Survival Awareness course for families (children 12 and over). Every local boater knows how quickly weather conditions — and luck — can change in our coastal waters. This practical, hands-on course stresses the prevention and treatment of hypothermia and the use of lifesaving equipment.
