the government's housing
assistance programs managed
to make fairly sizeable down
payments, according to an
article in the March issue of
the Housing Quarterly,
published by the Mimstry of
l ands, Parks and Housing.

The average down pay
ment of $18,600 represents
28 6 per cent of the average
purchase price of $65,000. In
the Vancouver area, nearly
60) per cent of first home
buyers had down payments
otf $20,000 of more

This was one of the in
teresang facts which emerged
from an analysis of informa
tion obtained from those
people using the provincial
government's home purchase
assistance programs during
the first & months of 1983

Just over 40 per cent were
buying homes in the Greater
Vancouver Regional district,
cight per centoin the Capital
Region and Stoo per cent in
other parts of the province
