Al? - Sanday News, Febraary 21, 1982 Cottage brewery on its way By CHARLES MAYER RESIDENTS opposing establishment of a cottage brewery at Horseshoe Bay - the first of its kind in Canada — went down to defeat as West Van- couver council last week voted in favor of the local industry. Disgruntled Horseshoe Bay locals challenged Round Table Enterprises’ proposal to rezone property at 6695 Nelson to brew in-house English draught beer and argued that such a facility would disrupt the en- vironment and cause vermin infestation of the area. “I’ve conducted a minor survey in Horseshoe Bay,” claimed William Macinnes, a concerned resident. “And it revealed that people are adamantly opposed to the brewery. “Of great concern among the residents was the odor from the brew mash It would drift and invade the residential area and an air pollution engineer would back up this statement ” Maclnnes also claimed Uthat a cottage brewery would attract rats, crows and gulls. since stored ale ingredicats are a foodstuff for the vermin However, Round Table Enterprises owner John Mitchell rejected MacInnes’ contention that the brewery would plague Horseshoe Bay with rats or any other un- wanted creatures. “This in-house brewery for the Troller pub would only give off a slight scent,” explained Mitchell. “This odor is not objectionable and is comparable to a small bakery.” “And as for rats... I can assure you thaf{ the entire building is solid concrete. Rats can't get in through concrete. Mitchell then slammed the resident group objecting to his cottage industry and said: “What you (Horseshoe Bay faction) are saying is nothing less than gross, malicious innuendo against us (the Troller Pub).” As it stands, Troller's intends to produce, in the 770 sq. ft. facility, a maximum of 400 gallons of ale a week. This translates into three brews ai weck employing one person. In addition, working hours would be between 9 am and S pm excluding Sundays But Maclnnes stuck to his assertions “I request council to deny their application” for rezoning,” he concluded Not all Horseshoe Bay locals viewed the cottage brewery as ea community LEARNING PROBLEMS? Arthur McArthur spoke in defence of the in- house industry and en- couraged such operations as necessary for the local and national economy. “I can honestly say that, without a doubt, I am happy with the Horseshoe Bay pub proposal,” said McArthur. “I had my doubts when they first presented the idea but these have since been alleviated. Anytime we can have gainful employment for our children... then ['m for it.” West Vancouver alder- men agreed with McArthur. But Alderman David Finlay proposed that, in order to stave off similar develop- ment schemes, “this area should be spot zoned and council’s resolution should include limiting Troller's to 400 gallons a week which is to be sold by the glass only. Also, there are to be no additional beer outlets and no retail sales.” Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys supported Finlay’s motion but added that the spot zoning clause would have to be addressed “later in a special meeting of council.” Round Table Enterprises’ brewery project, however, must still pass two readings by council before it can proceed. And, as Municipal Clerk Doug Allen pointed out, “If necessary, ad- ditional public hearings will be held.” 24-hour term applicants Deadine is Maret Pts b coemcdaabes North: Vane couven Coalt Jarnes Carhe sptsey toys TAKE THE S-MINUTE IAAC ROUTE TO 1981 TAX SAVINGS Spend just five minutes at The Permanent and you may save 1981 income taxes with this specially-designed income averaging program Even tf you already have invested your qualifying income, this program could benetit you * No minimum amount of qualifying income required Use our cash.
