C7-Sunday News, February 10, 1980 ADVERTISEMENT By Henning Brasso BIG COMFORT FOR RENT: What will you do in the _ future when you need a large car for a while but they have become really scarce? Why, just visit your friendly neigh- borhood large car rental agency. “Perhaps only 10 per tent of the industry mix will be super- large cars - as today's six-passenger cars will be known by around 1985,” says William Brourke. executive vice-president of Ford’s North American operations. “While most people will feel very comfortable with small, four-passenger cars by then for everyday use, several weeks a year they simply won't be large enough for Mom, Dad and the children.” The answer, he said, would be for daily rental companies to buy substantial numbers of “super-large” cars and cater to families who need six-passenger cars only for short periods, such as two or three week vacations. “You rent vacation accommodations, so why not rent the vacation car as well?” he said. He added that while owning a big car has had important psychological benefits for some people, by 1985 this appeal will have diminished - partly due to the cost of big cars and gas “but also because the luxury we associate with big cars will be just as available in small cars. What's more, I think people will decide it was the luxury, comfort, convenience and ride characteristics they wanted after all, not the sheer mass represented by large cars.” ERIKA OF '81: Talking of the future, here's a picture of the new Ford Erika, the front-wheel drive line you can expect to see later this year. At the moment, only the two-door and wagon will be available here; the picture above is of a European model. The Mercury model will be the lym. I guess It get along well with the Bobcat... a couple of economical cats! In fact, front-wheel drive is one thing of the ‘80s. The Zephyr will be replaced in mid-1982 by a stretched version of Erika, and by mid-1985, most of Ford's full-size cars will start the transition to front-wheel drive. The below shows the timetable for Ford's changes over the next five years. 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 §=61985 Granada and Monarch will be redesigned for "81, sharing major components with the current Fairmont and Zephyr models. Versailles will be dropped for a year, and an all-new version in ‘82 will be based mechanically on the intermediate Thunderbird and Cougar. Granada, Monarch and Versailles are scheduled to remain rear-wheel drive models at least through 1984. New sheet metal is planned in 83 for Mustang and Capri and LTD/Margquis. T’bird and Cougar will be downsized again in 83, but will remain rear-drive models, as will the big Lincoins when they are down-sized the following year. As you can see, the 1980s are going to be an exciting time of change and improvement for Ford cars - and you read all about it here first' SMALLER AND BETTER: Newspaper reporters aren't the type of people to say something mice unless it's deserved So I was really pleased tu read what Len Coates had to say tn his Toronto Star column, Aato World, after he test drove the 1980 Continental Mark VI. “As Cars get smaller they are gencrally getting better, too. and this especially holds true for the 1980 Lincolns,” he wrote “PE tested a 1980 Continental Mark VI and the improvement over the old Mark V is remarkable “Gone ts the feeling that no road was wide enough or that you needed a held to park st, or that only prayer and ex tremely good luck would get a Lincoln through a tight spot in traffic ~ “Steering is more precise. wt handles better and overall ts more pleasant and safer to dmvee The Mark Viois also a much more sensible car for the energy conscious KOs with less weight and overdnve ~ SERVICE SPECIAL SAVES YOU MONEY: Would you luke to save $40 on labor for a lube and ot] ignition tune up flushing of Cooling svstem and installation of anti freeze plus a check of suspension steering brakes and such much more” Bring your car any make inchuding the older models in te Brasso soon for our Bumper to Bumper Super Service Special... and pay only $55 JS instead of $9 S for labor (parts and fluids catrat You wont get a chance every day to save $40 as casily as thas Brasso Lincoln Mercury. 1408 Marine Dr, North Van, YRR-7172 : ; NS664
