Disc jockey performs early-morning heroics

But on Friday, Nov. 19, the
part-time disc jockey hung around
during -the early morning and
talked with co-workers.

The chat was abruptly halted at
about 3:20 a.m. when waitress
Gladys Ingham rushed into the
tavern to say that a car was on

’ fire in the back parking lot.

Within minutes Kiernan had
pulled a man out of the smoke-
filled interior of the burning car.

He went back into the car a
second time to search the back
seat for the man’s phantom friend
shortly before the Volkswagen
Gulf was fully ablaze.

‘‘As soon as I got out again the
back struts blew and opened up
the back of the hatchback, and
the whole car was completely
engulfed,’ said Kiernan.

‘‘When I came running out with
everybody, I noticed the
headlights were going on, and it
looked like someone was trying to
start the car. I knew someone had
to be in there in order to do
that,’’ said Kiernan.

He said there were six-foot (2
m) flames shooting from the back
of the car when he first spotted
the vehicle.

The 21-year-old man in the car
was apparently drunk.

Kiernan said he knew the
rescued man from Argyle second-
ary school days.

“1 didn’t know it was him when
I pulled him out,’’ said Kiernan,
adding that he was concerned the
gas tank would blow up during
the rescue.

After .Kiernan had pulled the
man to the safety of a nearby

sidewalk, he told Kiernan that
“his buddy was still in the car.”’
But Kiernan, who burned his
fingertips during his search of the
back seat, found nobody else in
the vehicle.
No other injuries were reported.
“T think that he had so much to
drink, and in his shape, | think he
would have probably just stayed
in there (the car),’* said Kiernan.
The rescued man was not
charged with any criminal offence.
