Today this space is far more than a bedroom. It includes a bathroom, a dressing area, and pethaps a kitchenette or exercise area. Within the master bedroom suite, the distinction between bedroom and bath areas has blur- red, which suggests new ways to look at selection and placement of fixtures and furnishings. “The bathtub is coming out of the bathroom. It is being placed in the dressing area or the bedroom itself, rather than in the tradi- tionat bathroom,’’ says interior designer Norman DeHaan, FAIA, FASID, Chicago. DeHaan recently created an ele- gant 520-square foot master suite for the Kohler Design Center in Kohler, Wisconsin. Rathirg, he notes, is becoming a more social activity again, much as it was in Renaissance times. Heace there is less desire to hide the bathtub in the privacy of the bathroom. He points out that peopie are beginning to see ihe whirlpool as a way to relax, and the shower as a necessity for cleanup. “We are becoming more like other cultures in that we do one thing to soap down, and another to relax,’’ he says. ‘‘Relaxing in a whirlpool is far preferable to popping aspirin if you are overstressed.”* He also sees a correlation be- tween what he calls ‘the art of relaxing’’ and the outdoors. The bathroom, he says, is no longer tucked away in an interior room. It is increasingly becoming a perimeter space, one with large windows and a great deal of natu- ral light. Moving the whirlpool out of the bathroom also makes is possible to create a private area containing toilet, bidet and favatory, rather than isolating the toilet in a tiny space behind a closed door, he Says. This then becomes the most private part of the master suite. A second lavatory serves the dressing area. DeHaan suggests that a laundry room located just off the master suite, not in it, would be a useful addition. This type of personal laundry would be a refinement of the hall-closet type of installations that have been appearing in some homes. “You could have your washer and dryer and the ironing board all together so you can deal with the laundry at its source.’’ When remodelling prepare in advance through consultation From page 35 be able to live with for a while. Trends in paint colors come and go, but before you decide to jump on the bandwagon, remember that this is a much bigger decision than buying a trendy new outfit that you can retire to the back of the closet once the novelty wears off. It can be very difficult to sell a home at the right price, so many people who once might have “moved up” to a bigger home are now opting to stay put. If that’s your sityation, you may be considering remodelling your home or building an addi- -tion. A new room can provide the extra space your family needs, and a remodelled kitchen and/or bathroom can change the way you feel about the whole house. Make sure you do plenty of research before you start a project like this. Don’t just plunge in without’ thoroughly considering your wants and needs. If you’re hiring a contractor to do the work, ask friends and neighbors for the recommendations, and try to talk to several contractors be- fore you choose one. If you don’t know much about remodelling and the contractor tells you that your plan won't work or needs modification, take his or her advice. You want the job to be structu- rally sound as well as attractive — and you want to still be happy with the results in years to come. The Guild House Re Be fa ff mM Silber mn in tt i Redecorating?
