2 - Sunday, August 8, 1993 - Nomh Shore News NEW DIRECTIONS IN HEALTH SCARE Man’s violent outburst alarms residents of townhouse complex @ MARY MILTON couldn’t believe it when her 10-year-old son came running into their townhouse on Cedar Village Crescent, screaming for help. She ran outside to discover that her son, while playing with friends in the driveway of their neighbor’s home, had been beaten about the head by a 47-year-old man. Shocked and confused, she watched as the man walked up to another neighbor's doorway, try- ing to get in. The man kept repeating, ‘! want io go home, I just want to go home.” It is a family-oriented complex that Milton, her husband Maurice and their two sons share — com- plete with a pool, a nearby school, and many children. People tend to feel safe in closely shared quarters such as these, and everyone natu- rally keeps an eye out for everyone else. At 7:30 p.m. on August 2, the hot holiday mood beginning to wind down, no one expected the man from the complex across the street from Milton’s family to jump from his car, smash the windshields of two cars parked on By Paula Carison Contributing Writer the road, run over to Mary’s son, and begin to punch and hit him on the head. ‘*He came across the street with his pants half down,”’ said Milton. “After the attack, I had to ask him to please pull up his pants because there were kids around. So he did.” She said her son received a few bumps and bruises, but is other- wise all right. She took him to the doctor the next day for a check- up. . It is her other son, the 10-year -old, who seems to be mere adversely affected by the incident. “He witnessed the whole thing, and he’s still rather upset. The two of them haven't been sleeping well these past few nights,’ she said. News of the attack spread quickly, so Milton decided to hold a meeting Tuesday night to ad- dress her concerns with neighbors. The man who lived in Unit #1, who has since left the townhouse, was no. ordinary, middle-aged man, He was mentaily challenged, needed 24-hour care, and had — by some neighbors’ accounts — the approximate intelligence of a 10-year-old child. The man had lived in the quiet townhouse for six months, tended around the clock by three shifts of caregivers. He was placed there by Bur- naby-based Mainstream Society for Integrated Community Living. The organization helps men- tally challenged people live in the community by way of apartment programs and group homes.
