Another resident, Leanne Martin, was ‘not impressed with council’s decision. | ““It’s not. good enough — they should have re done some- thing,” she said.” 4:30 a.m. to go to work, and sleep has been in short supply. She said if the noise problem isn't solved soon, she plans to sell her condo. Aijaz Wafai, owner of the A&W at 920 Marine Dr., said 18% to 20% of his sales take place overnight. He says it’s unfair co blame A&W for drug or alcohol use. Wafai said he would be willing to take such measures as erecting a noise barrier or hiring a security guard to cut down on the noise, but only if residents agree in advance that they would be satisfied with these potentially costly mea- sures. Wafai estimated that hiring “a security guard could cost up -to $40,000 a year, while a soundproof fence could cost - “$19,000. Since the complaints have risen this year, Wafat said he has tried putting up a no- parking sign on the side of the parking lot closest to the homes and tries to keep the intercom at a Jower level. Wafai also said he has 40 employees, mostly from North Vancouver, who would suffer if the restaurant were to be closed at night. There are two employees who work the night shift “We need to take action now,” said Coun. Barbara Perrault. “There is only one all night drive-thru in the city. They (the neighbours) have asked repeatedly for changes. This restaurant is also across from Capilano Mall, where 10 -new theatres are ‘going in. This is a licence to print money in that location right now.” Perrault and Coun. John Braithwaite voted against the proposal for staff to study the issue. “Is any business entitled to make that 20% at the expense of their neighbours — at the expense of their sleep?” Fearnley asked council mem- bers. Council directed staff to review measures to regulate noise at 24-hour establish- ments. The RCMP will also be asked for a report on crime in the area and the city youth worker will look at the drug situation in the area. City staff will present a preliminary report on June 2 In the meantime, council instructed the owner and the residents to try to find a medi- ated solution to the problem.
