Former teacher jailed A FORMER North Vancouver elementary school teacher was sentenced Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court to 12 months in jail for committing gross indecency with a former student. Carl William Stymiest, 48, was convicted in June after the student, now in his early 30s with a wife and three children, testified that the Burrard View Community School teacher had engaged him in masturbution and oral sex in the early '70s. The witness gave evidence that Stymiest, his Grade 6 teacher, once took him to a Richmond motel on the pretence of going on a weekend camping trip with Stymiest and his wife. The sentence handed down by Mr. Justice Wiliam Trainor is being appealed. Trial date set A TRIAL date has been set for one of two men charged in connection with an attempted cigarette heist from 2 Caulfeild Village supermarket. Tyler J. Burgess, 27, of Burnaby, will appear Feb. 7 in B.C. Supreme Court for trial and jury selection. The trial is scheduled to run from Feb. 10 to 14. The charges against Burgess and co-accused David K. Raffle, 22, of Surrey, stem from a March 23 incident in which a joint-forces police operation interrupted an early-morning robbery. Burgess and Raffle were ordered to stand trial on five counts, including robbery of two Canada Safeway employees, break and enter, theft of a Toyota pickup track and possession of the stolen vehicle. Senator hospitalized NORTH VANCOUVER Senator Ray Perrault was listed in good condition in Lions Gate Hospital Thursday. 4 spokesman in Perrault's Ottawa office would only say that Perraull, 65, is in the hospital for minor surgery. “He's in good condition.
