SENTINEL SECONDARY | Teacher awarded for recycling SUPER RECYCLER Chris Georgas has won recognition from the Greater Vancouver Regional District for his efforts to promote recycling of paper at West Vancouver’s Sentinel Secondary School. Tons of paper, normally col- lected and disposed of by janitorial staff, was gathered up by the 14 members of the school’s special needs class, earning about $1,000 that was spent on computer soft- ware and field trips for them. Georgas was one of 13 people honored at the 5th Annual Recycl- ing Awards dinner held in June at the Pan Pacific Hotel. A social studies teacher, his interest was sparked by a package on recycling he happened upon. After catling Environment Canada for more information, Georgas bought about 40 recep- tacles and placed them in the classrooms. Then he showed a slide show and talked to students on ways they could recycle high- quality, multi-grade, multi-colored paper. . The school’s 47 computers were producing reams of. high-quality computer paper, and this was col- lectable, along with sheets of By MA’ EN CURTIS blue-lined looseleaf paper and test papers that students, for whatever reason, no longer wanted. “‘I¢ got to be second nature to deposit this paper. Before long we were collecting: tons of paper,’’ recalls Georgas. The teachable mentally-han- dicapped youths in the special- needs class were conscripted into the job of making the Thursday rounds to pick up the paper, a job they soon learned to enjoy. “They were doing something for the environment that also had a sound economic value,’’ says Georgas. Next year, Georgas is hoping that some of the other elementary and secondary schools will become involved in the program.
