B.C. alone produces over six per cent of the world’s newsprint, and no recycled newsprint at all. As world demand for recycled newsprint increases dramatically, Canada lags behind. Pve heard from Canadian newsprint manufacturers that the demand just isn’t there, that de- inking is too expensive, wages are (oo high in a recycled plant, and that recycled newsprint is an infe- tior product. ‘Right now there aren’t enough newspapers in the Lower Mainland to make recycling viable,’ says Scott Alexander from MacMillan-Bloedel. And he adds that ‘tmaking newsprint from virgin fibre is much cheaper.”’ Although at last there is a de- inking plant scheduled for B.C., there are already 267 such plants in operation worldwide. I recently visited the Golden State Newsprint plant in Pomona, California, to view their produc- tion facility. Pomona is about 50 kilometres east of downtown Los Angeles, a pleasant little town by California standards, with Eucalyptus trees, fruit orchards, and reasonably fresh air. The Golden State Newsprint plant produces 135,000 tonnes of ‘100 per cent recycled newsprint annually, and according to spokesman Ron Osborne they have no difficulty selling everything they produce. I asked him about objections | had heard, virgin fibre being cheaper, lack of demand, cost of de-inking and the quality of the product. ‘*Well,’’ he said, *‘there is cer- tainly no lack of demand. We get calls every day from people look- ing desperately for a recycled product. And we can produce a product that is equal in brightness to virgin paper, and we can pro- duce it at a competitive price.”’ Golden State sells its 30-pound recycled newsprint at $630 per tonne, in line with prices for virgin newsprint. Although the recycling process does tend to weaken the fibre, the newsprint is comparable in strength to virgin paper and capable of being used on any modern printing machine. If strength is an issue, then a blend- ed product, perhaps 50 per cent recycled, would give extra strength. “The notion that virgin fibre is cheaper is not true any more,”* says Osborne. ‘‘As recycling becomes more popular, the used newsprint becomes cheaper. State governments and municipalities here are legislating and organizing recycling, so the price comes down. And the technology for de-inking and removing the plastics is available, and getting better and cheaper."’ De-inking and recycling newsprint is certainly a booming . Ten years later, by 1985, there were 230 plants producing seven million tonnes. Making newsprint from recycled fibre is simply a process of re- pulping the fibre, de-inking it and cleaning it. At Golden State Newsprint the newsprint is de-inked in huge flotation tanks. A soap solution and air bubbles are injected through the bottom of the tank and rise up through the pulp, col- lecting ink particles into a froth on the surface. This froth is skimmed off, and the pulp is then ready for final cleaning. Finer ink particles are filtered gut, and a final hydrogen perox- ide bleaching gives the pulp its necessary brightness.
