Katen Tekakwitha, who died in 1680 at the age of 24, became the first lay North American Catholic to reach beatification and the first American Indian candidate for canonization, the last step before sainthood. The pope praised Tekak witha, calling her con- version to Catholicism “an unusual, bold and prophetic gesture, considering the social condition of women in the tnbes at the time .” The others beatified were: Francis De Montmorency- Level. first bishop of Quebec, Sister Manic for those who beatified by Church Guyart, founder of the Ursaline sisters; Rev. Jose De Anchieta, a missionary in Brazil; and Peter De Betancur, a Franciscan missionary in Guatemala.
