mailbox They died for right to opinions Dear Editor: It never ceases to amaze me how some people will fly off the handle, threaten to do all sorts of things, even demonstrate, because they do not happen to like the point of view of another person. 1 do not always agree with what Collins says, however | do defend his right to say anything he wants. Have we forgotten that many thou- sands of Canadians gave their lives so that we would have the right to state our opinion without fear of censorship or reprisal? Your newspaper has become much more en- joyable since Collins joined your staff. Controversy is healthy and should never be silenced by people who ob- viously do not exercise the ability to think for themselves and feel that it is their responsibility to dictate to the rest of us. Donaid |. Bird North Vancouver Next, move all traffic signals! Dear Editor: One of our affiliates sent a copy of Doug Collins’ article ‘‘Why pay the bouncer to throw you out?’” (Sunday, March 18). The article is simply sick, racist in the extreme. If your argument for printing such garbage is to allow freedom of expression, why not advocate the removal of all traffic lights so that we can all bash into one another? When one party argues for the mght to freely express themselves and in the process tramples on the dignity and respect of another party, all of us lose some basic freedomis. Art Kabe President B.C. Federation of Labour going? How much the NSWC pets from the unwilling taxpayer is unclear. According to the Secretary of State’s office, they were given $7,000 last year. But that would only be part of the story, because these pressure groups are ex- pert at squeezing juice out of the public orange. Not that they have to do very much squeezing. Money flows into their hands like North Shore rain. Not long ago, for instance, 1 reported that in 1983 the feds, acting in your worst in- terests, threw $3,000,000 in the direction of organized lhib- berdom. Now | find out that on January 26 the egregious Judy Erola stated in parhia- ment that for 1984 the amount will be five times as much, or $/5,000,000. (Do you wonder why your dollar’s going down and your taxes up?) HATE MEN What you are getting for this money is a lot of left- wing progaganda and other drivel. I did my best to enlighten you on that with my reports on the antics of the Vancouver Status of Women. And there is more drivel right here on the North Shore, as a glance at the NSWC_ newsletters would show you. The impression one gets from reading their stuff 1s that these babes hate men You would also think that the whole male population 1s perverted and thinks mainly of rape, porn, and beating up women, in that order. The May edition of the letter con tains this gem, for instance, over the name DJ. Stewart and under the ttle ‘Por SAN FRANCISCO EER em nae Fh * i get this straight by Doug Collins Cut these ladies off S FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, any woman is entitled to cook her own goose, write what she likes, and be a dedicated ec- centric. But why should the rest of us be made to subsidize her oddities? Specifically, why should we have to keep the North Shore Women’s Centre nography Separates’’ (I edit some words): ‘‘Men look at objects, women care about people; men j— off, women desire a person, men f—, women make love, men rape, women scream; men murder, women “*These babes hate men...’ die; men profit, women pay; men laugh, women weep; men talk rmghts, women’s mouths are silenced; men act, women suffer.”’ In the same issue, readers are asked to come out SSA fighting against the sinister North Shore News, which dares to display the harmless Sunshine Girls. “MONTY PYTHON” The Sunshine Girls porn. The above clean thinking. It is possible that the gentle ladies of the NSWC take themselves seriously. [t is also possible that their act is a state-supported version of Monty Python. The September issue, for exam- ple, is one long diatribe against the provincial budget, and contains this immortal line: ‘The budget is a mgid male response shaped by a com- petitive ethic ...”’ As I say, it doesn’t matter how kooky people are pro- vided they don’t expect the rest of us to susidize them. So I suggest that not one more public dollar-should go to the NSWC. The feds, of course will continue to fund, come what may. But perhaps Bill Bennett can take a look at this.
