Vancouver will be his home base,’’ says Bean. ‘‘He’s just taking a holiday from us.”’ Williams’ involvment with the Special Olympics — an international sports organiza- tion for the mentally han- dicapped — goes back to 1974 when he was in his first year with Toronto Maple Leafs. Noted sportsman Harry ‘‘Red’’ Foster, founder of Canadian Special Olympics program, recruited the Leaf rookie to do some work with the organization and Williams was hooked. When the feisty winger was traded to Vancouver in February, 1980, he became even more deeply involved. As the honorary head coach of the floor hockey program, Williams has work- ed closely with past B.C. Take me ... Summer home team coaches Flynn Lamont and Clint Morrison and cur- rent head man Joe Laitar. And when The Tiger drops in on practices the players’ eyes light up. - “Our athletes are all avid hockey fans,’’ says Bean. ‘‘When Dave shows up at a practice they hang on his to For a “Jubilee Smile” Customer satisfaction guarantee it. Special Olympics Summer Games at UBC in July. The Games are schedul- ed to be held every two years. The trade to Detroit was ill-timed as far as the Special Olympics were concerned. It came the day before Williams @as to accompany the B.C. team to Toronto for its ver- sion of the floor hockey na- tional championship — the Little Stanley Cup. Williams, who was suddenly thrust into the turmoil of negotiating a contract with a new team and the logistics of moving his family across the continent, had to opt out of the trip. ‘*l had to worry about tak- ing care of my own kids,”’ says Williams. ‘‘And they come first.’ But perhaps more impor- tant — at least in terms of the NORTH VANCOUVER 1177 MARINE DRIVE , North Van program’s survival — Williams has been instrumen- tal as a fund-raiser. The Tiger Williams Pro Am _ Golf Classic raised over $18,000 for the Special Olympics this year. And last year — at the first Classic — the take was $14,000. What are the prospects for a third annual Pro Am bear- ing The Tiger’s name? Or for Williams’ continuing work with the organization, for that matter? ‘*‘Hopefully we'll be living in Vancouver in the off- season but it’s all hypothetical right now,”’ he says. ‘‘All I can say is we’ll definitely give it a try.”’ You can bet a lot of very special kids are hoping it’s a successful try.
