An eminent scholar who set up a foundation for the propagation of oriental studies, he brought his wife and daughter to Canadz where he settled as an orchard- owner in the Okanagan Valley. A man to whom his family was deeply attached, Caetani died in 1934. Trapped in a land that clear- ly did not suit her refined, Old- World tastes, Mrs. Caetani spun a cocoon of solitude around herself and her daughter for the next 25 years. Although Sveva’s desire to wander beyond the garden gate or openly to take solace in the prac- tice of visual art were cruelly smothered by her wilful mother, the dutiful daughter read litera- ture, history and philosophy in three languages and surreptitiously taught herself to paint. It was not until her mother, after heartlessly refusing to pass on the family fortune to her daughter, died in 1961, that Sveva emerged to eke out an existence of her own. It should not surprise us to hear the artist say that the show at the istitutio Italiano di Cultura is the result of an “unbearable need of expression.” In spite of the fact that she has Archie Graham ART REVIEW no formal art-schoo! training, Caetani is a painter of consider- able skill, one who uses an unusual dry-brush watercolor technique with astonishing cantrol and sensitivity.
