A poll conducted by a Toronto firm jhas left a gleeful Vic Stephens, leader “of the provincial — Conservatives, predicting he may be the - province’s next premier. While political observers attribute much of his claim to optimism, they think there is probably: enough in the poll to worry Bill Bennett and ~ make him come up with some pre-election goodies in a near budget during the future. - The poll, emmissioned by © the Tories, shows the NDP ahead with 44 per cent of decided voters, with Socreds dropping to 36 per cent and the Tories in third place with | 15 per cent. Whereas the figures may not be completely accurate for the province they are seen as being indicative of a voting trend.) Even though the Conser- vatives are shown well behind, 1S per cent repre- sents three times their showing in the previous poll. It is not merely this figure which excites Stephens but ~ the fact that so many of those polled were undecided while others were not firm suppor- ters of the two major parties. More. than one third of committed voters said their only interest was to keep the other party out. It’s these people Stephens thinks he might be able to attract -- and not just disillusioned Socred supporters. The poll showed that 27 per cent of people voting NDP at a provincial level would vote Consérvative nationally. Stephens is jubilant: and claims the poll clearly shows there is a third government alternative and that people can choose that option if they put aside their fears of being forced to choose Socred or NDP. How indicative the poll 1s of the entire — province’s voting trend is another matter. Only 401 people were polled, with the majority being in the Vancouver area. \ At a - federal level, Liberal and - Conservative , parties are excited with the latest gallup poll showing just two percentage points between them. _ both: Bennett | ‘and Cana ..'' digging in ‘their heels over | a their stands. ; They : accuse Bennett of : trying to buy votes for an. expected spring election, of. _ ° CPI chairman Ian Sinclair has said he may go ahead with -the MB. takeover, whatever jections. both Dashaway Feature Pacific: = ‘Investments: are Bennett's — ob= | to, kill | fauoduce legisag in- terest’ in MB by imposing - Conditions of residence. . + ry Meanwhile, Sinclair has responded to Bennett’s objection that the takeover _.would.take, away MB’s B.C. character while “British _ Columbia is not for sale”. ; He describes Bennett's view as counter to Canadian The expansion" of Prince Rupert is assured through a $100 million investment by Alberta to help build a new grain terminal there.
