Many of the famous dhia-
monds listed in Notable Dia-
monds of the World have
disappeared — lost, strayed
or stolen — but only one is
known to have been
deliberately destroyed,
reports the Jewellery In-
dustry Council.

The tale of the hapless dia-
when the diamond, from
India, was given by an In-
Governor of Madras: The
diamond on his death was
willed to his sister and two
brothers.

In 1818, the Pigott —
somewhere along the line it
acquired an additional “t!”
— was sold to Rundell and

It was then that a certain

Albania under the Sultan of
Turkey, purchased the 49-
carat gem. He was a noted
collector of precious jewels,
and, it is said, beautiful
women.

Displeased with the
Pasha’s high-handed
manners and greed _ for
power, the Sultan sent a
group of militia to bring the
end his despotic grasp on
Albania.

Ah_ Pasha primty fought
the Sultan's emissaries and,
in the battle, became
mortally wounded. His dying
wish — that he be brought
back to his throne room —
was granted, and he asked

his faithful Captain to bring:

his two most. prized
possessions — his wife and
the Pigott diamond — to
him.

The Captain listened in
horror as his chief bade him,

while carefully observing the
Pasha.

Tt was with a great sigh of
relief that he watched the
Pasha's eyes glaze over and
his hand, holding Vasilikee’s

drop.

The Pasha had died, and
the Captain released the
grateful Pasha’s wife.

Diamonds, it is known,
are very hard to crush, and
the Pigott had managed to
buy time for the lovely
Vasilikee and spare her life.
