In the Soviet Union though, just the reverse is wing! Take the new GAZ-14, for example, It’s called the Chaika (Seagull), and it measures 18 inches longer than it's less-than-tin redecessor - the GAZ-13. The new Chaika’s overall. iength isa whopping 240.7 inches (20 feet!), it’s width is 79.5 inches and it's height - 60 inches, It tips:the scales . at a mere 5698: pounds-- 858 pounds more than the. GAZ-13, Power is supplied by a 317 CID aluminum V- 8 with twin 4 barrel carbs and rated at 220 hp. The car’s__ standard features include front disc brakes, stereo, and - headlamp washers. Gas mileage figures are not - available for this behemoth, but clearly, tk. ce must be . no Soviet equivalent of the CAFE mileage standards set by the American government... : CAFE . (Corporate Average Fuel Economy). standards have now been worked out for light trucks, too, and (at least in the United States) a manufacturer's range of 4 wheel drive “general utility” vehicles must now average 15.8 mpg. (U.S.), while all other light trucks have to average 17.2 miles per gallon (U.S.) of precious fossil fuel. If a manufacturer fails to achieve the standard over it’s range of vehicles, there’s the possibility of steep fines ($5 per vehicle for each one- tenth of an mpg below the standard). The averages-will escalate annually from now on, and the effects should be as profound on the truck industry, as they already have been (and will continue to be) on cars. Look for smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamically designed pickups and vans in the very near future. Sales of light trucks have been quite phenomenal for most of this decade, and still show no signs of tapering off. What looked like a fad, with the on- slaught of the vanning craze in the early seventies, has become a way of life for a great many motorists. Not so many years ago, light trucks were the sole reserve of businesses, but no more. Now, well more than half the buyers of pickups, 4 X 4s, or vans, say the vehicles are for personal use. Commercial applications have taken a backseat to such chores as hauling dirt bikes or towing the family trailer. This last point is becoming all the more important now that manufacturers are cutting back on the size of engines in cars. Some smaller engined cars are just nowhere near as adaptable to towing as a light truck. When you figure in the truck’s all-round ruggednes and go- anywhere ability, you begin to see why so many people are investing in pickups and vans as tow vehicles and personal transportation. My teenagers swear by their pickup - there's just nothing beats it for versatility. You literally can haul anything from a few pair of skis, to a load of gravel, and then use the truck later the same day to go to a movie, or a club, or out to dinner. And I haven't even mentioned visibility, yet. You drive from way up there in a light truck, and it’s great! You can sce well over the cars ahead of you and this gives you a far better chance of pvoi ing accidents. Many longtime truck people claim this is the main thing they miss when they drive a car again ... they feel a whole lot more vulnerable. Not so in an F- 100 pickup or an Econoline van, though - both of which are the sales leaders in their class, and both of which, we have in stock along with the mini Ford pickup. the Courier, and the #1 4 wheel drive - the new ronco. Bronco sales have increased by about 5 times since the new one was introduced just over a year ago, so we're having trouble keeping them on the lot. We do have several experienced truck reps always on call, though, and they'll be able to spec any line of light Ford truck for you ... anytime.
