North Shore News A group of 17 North. ‘Vancouver parents have ex- pressed their concern about ‘the effects of. ‘‘unstructur- ed’’ teaching in schools like Handsworth Secondary and made a strong plea for the implementation of the core curriculum presently being promoted by “Education Min- ister Pat McGeer.. In a letter to the North Shore News they presented the following viewpoint on. this controversial issue: discussion regarding need for a Core Curriculum to ensure that our children learn the basics and also that . there should be some pro- vince wide uniformity in this - regard. Parents on the North Shore may be interested. in an example from our own District 44 School System which vividly points out why the core. curriculum is needed. ‘The school in question is. Handsworth Secondary which runs on a modular (unstructured) system. At Handsworth, each student receives a customized time- table which allows for vary- ing amounts of unassigned time between classes. unstructured § unassigned time may range from 20 minutes to two hours and the student is free to leave the school if he wishes. ** Attendance is taken each day at 10:30 a.m. and some- times, but by no means always, parents may be advised if their child is absent. Similarly, some tea- chers may occasionally con- tact parents if the child misses specific classes. . FIVE HOURS LESS ' “A study of a number of current Grade 8, 9 and 10 student timetables is reveal- ing and suggests at least ‘some of the reasons why “Johnny d--c~”’* read well and has trouvie with arith- metic’’. In these grades, the Ministry of Education Guide- lines prescribes 25 hours per week of classroom instruc- tion, subject to minor vatia- tions due to scheduling etc. At Handsworth, the students ~Handsworth, ‘*There is currently much - the 3 -same Guidelines call This | are scheduled to attend classes only 18 to 23 hours _with the average being about 20 hours. ‘This may seem startling, but now examine the corres- ponding . numbers for the _ constant i.e., English, Math, Socials, Science -and Phys. _ ‘Ed. KIDS SHORTCHANGED same time. the parents are being told in effect, “‘don’t ask questions, just pay your taxes”’ “The recent. loss of Del- brook Secondary now puts many parents on the horns of a dilemma. Delbrook was an optional school for this area, offering a structured 25 hour week. Will parents now be forced to send their children to Handsworth and in the process be shortchanged? “It’s probably true . that. the highly motivated stu- | dents, the top 20%, will do well under any system. Is your child in this category or is he/she in the more typical remaining 80%? Does he or | she need the full educational and classroom content that Victoria prescribes? “The future of our chil- dren is in our hands now.
