deliver the valedictory
address. Bahadon dropped
the program, sat up in the
bleachers and hstened at-

tentively.

“Amenca is the land of
dreams,” Miss Plotka
declared, “which promotes

the rights of an individual.”

Her speech written
after the controversy began
— noted the First Amend-
ment guarantees “the mght
of treedom of speech to
people of all races, religions
and behefs,” as well as the
mght to petition.

‘Outside forces”
sometimes make dreams
unattainable, she said,
adding, “At times. one

person’s mghts may conflict
with another's” .

Bahadon, who attended
the school for 18 months on
a student visa, defeated

Plotka in a contest to speak
at the graduation. But
Parents and teachers ob
jected to allowing an Iranian
to give the valedictory
address while 53 Americans
are being held hostage in
Iran.

After 80 of the school’s
140 teachers signed a
petition protesting her
selecnon, Bahadori decided
to withdraw.

Plotka was chosen to
replac®é her classmate. but
agreed to do so only after
Bahadon asked her.

Before delivering the
address. Plotka said she was
not’ concerned how her
teachers and_ classmates
might react to her remarks.

“I'm just going to pul it oul
there and they can take it as
they want to,” she said.
